Now let’s learn about the best surahs to read for help and guidance.

What are the best surahs to read for help and guidance?

surah for help and guidance

Here are the best five surahs to read when seeking Allah’s help and guidance.

1-    surah al Fatiha. – Best Surah for Help and Guidance

Surah al Fatiha is the first surah in the holy Quran, we read it in every Rakah of every prayer, here it is:

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ١

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ٢

All praise is for Allah—Lord of all worlds,

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ٣

the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

مَـٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ٤

Master of the Day of Judgment.

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ٥

You ˹alone˺ we worship and You ˹alone˺ we ask for help.

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ ٦

Guide us along the Straight Path,

صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ٧

the Path of those You have blessed—not those You are displeased with, or those who are astray.

When reciting this surah we ask Allah for his guidance, we ask hi to show us the right path and help us to stay on the right track.

From this beautiful surah we learn that we should always praise Allah, he gave us all the things we have in our lives. Make sure to also check out our guide to the best Surah for exams here.

Allah said in the holy Quran:

“If you tried to count Allah’s blessings, you would never be able to number them. Indeed, humankind is truly unfair, ˹totally˺ ungrateful” (Quran (14:34))

Beside being guided, Allah will reward us for thanking and praising him, he said in the holy Quran:

‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more…”. It also pushes away punishment “…But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.” (Quran (14:7)

When reading this surah Al-Fatiha we call Allah by his names Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem, which reminds us how merciful Allah is. And those two names came right before the verse “Guide us to the straight path” to show us that the best way to ask Allah for something is by calling his names.

Allah said:

“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So, call upon Him by them” (Quran 7:18)

Also, another good lesson we learn from this amazing Surah is to always remember the day of judgement. Remembering the day of judgement will help us stay on the right path and to try our best to do only good deeds.

Also, we learn from the holy Quran that we all will be judged for our deeds, whether good or bad.

“We will set up the scales of justice on the Day of Judgment, so no soul will be wronged in the least. And ˹even˺ if a deed is the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth.” (Quran 21:47)

“Do not think ˹O Prophet˺ that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when ˹their˺ eyes will stare in horror (The day of Judgement)” (Quran: 14:42)

We should always ask Allah for guidance and help, as he is the only one who will be there for us whenever we need him, and he will never leave us alone.

What the Prophet taught us:

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) teached Muaz -one of his companions- to say the following Dua: “… I advise you not to miss supplicating after every Salat (prayer) saying: O Allah, help me remember You, express gratitude to You and worship You in the best manner”

When reciting surah Al-Fatiha in prayer Allah reply to you, the Prophet (peace nad blessing be upon him) said: “Allah said: ‘I have divided the prayer between Myself and My slave into two halves, and My slave shall have what he has asked for…

When the slave says: “All the praise is to Allah, the Lord of all that exists”, Allah says: “My slave has praised Me, and My slave shall have what he has asked for” …

And when he says “The Mos Gracious, the Most Merciful”, Allah says: “My slave has extolled Me, and My slave shall have what he has asked for… till the end of the Hadith. (Sunan Ibn Majah 3784)

2-     Surah Ar-Rahman.

Surah Ar-Rahman is also another great surah to read for help and guidance. The name of the surah comes from Allah’s name, the merciful.

Surah Rahman talks about the many blessings that Allah gave to us, and it opens the eyes of the reciter to the truth that many people choose to deny. When it’s read with care and an honest heart it brings us closer to Allah and makes us thank him for everything we have in life.

It was narrated that: “The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) went to the companions and recited Surah Rahman but they were all quiet. He told them that he went to the Jinn and recited it to them and they were responsive. And when he would recite the verses ‘And which of the favors of the Lord will you deny’ the jinn would respond ‘There is nothing among your bounties that we can deny, all praises belong to Allah”.

Reciting surah Rahman brings us closer to Allah and opens our eyes to the truth and acknowledges the many blessings that we have in life. Therefore, reading it removes all the questions that keep going in your mind, it will help and guide you to the right path.

Surah Ar-Rahman is also one of the best Surahs to read for marriage, and you can read more about the best Surahs for Marriage here.

3-     Surah Mulk.

Another Surah for help and guidance is Surah Mulk.  The surah discusses Allah’s greatness and how he created the heavens, earth, humans, and creatures in the best forms. Giving us humans all the blessings we have and therefore we should be thankful for everything we have.

Abu Hurairah Narrated that, the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said about the benefits of reading surah al Mulk: “Indeed there is a Surah in the Qur’an of thirty Ayat, which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is [Surah] Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.”

From this hadith, we understand that reading surah Al Mulk will intercede for its reciter until Allah forgives all his/her sins.

Understanding the many blessings that Allah gave us and how he created the heavens and earth shows us the truth behind everything. Therefore, this surah is a great surah to read for help and guidance.

4-     surah Waqiah.

Surah al-Waqi’ah is well-known for being the Surah of wealth.

Abdullah ibn Masud (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, ‘Whoever recites Surah al-Waqi’ah every night, he will never be afflicted by poverty. And Ibn Masud used to order his daughters to recite it every night. [Bayhaqi]

It is reported that, when Abdullah ibn Masud (RA) was close to passing away, Uthman (RA) offered him a stipend for the work that he had done for the community, which Abdullah (RA) had never claimed before. Uthman (RA) suggested that, now that he was passing away, the stipend could be useful for his daughters. Abdullah (RA) simply said, ‘Do you fear poverty for my children? I have commanded them to read Surah al-Waqi’ah every night…’

5-     Surah Al-Kahf.

talks about faith (the people of the cave), wealth (the story of the man who had two beautiful gardens), power (the story of Dhul-Qarnayn), and knowledge (the story of Moses and Khidr).

From all these beautiful stories we learn how to deal with life’s obstacles and tests. We learn that we should be patient, thankful, and humble. We understand that having faith in Allah will solve all our problems and know that he will be there for us to protect us and guide us no matter what happens. So, if you’re feeling anxious reading surah Kahf will heal your heart and makes all the anxiety goes away.

“[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”

In this verse the people of the cave ran away from their people and hid in the cave, asking Allah to guide them and have mercy on them. As you can see, they had a strong faith in Allah, knowing that he is the only one who can help them. And like they did we should do the same. Ask Allah for his guidance and give you the strength to overcome this feeling.
