Can I Listen To The Quran While Lying Down?

can you listen to the quran while lying down featured

Yes, you can listen to the Quran while lying down. There’s nothing wrong with listening or reciting the Quran while lying down, even if you don’t have a medical condition that requires you to lay down. It holds no disrespect to the Holy Book or to Allah SWT.

Most people listen to the Quran while sleeping or trying to sleep because it eases their minds and helps them relax.

There’s no Islamic law or regulation that prohibits listening to the Quran while trying to sleep, and the same goes for listening to it while lying down during the process.

Al-Bukhaari and Muslim narrated that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him) used to lie in Aisha’s (May Allah Be Pleased With Her) lap and recite the Quran.

Allah SWT said in His Holy Book:

“[They are] those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth [and pray], “Our Lord! You have not created [all of] this without purpose. Glory be to You! Protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

(Surah Ali-Imran)

That is, if reciting from memory, a person may recite the Quran in any posture they are in, whether standing, sitting, or reclining, and whether they have wudu or are in a condition of mild impurity. This means listening to the Quran in these positions is permissible as well.

However, if they are reading from the Mushaf, it is not permitted for someone who does not have wudu to touch the Mushaf unless they have performed wudu.

Which Surah Relieves Anxiety And Stress?

Surah Ad-Duha helps to relieve anxiety and stress. Even though listening to any chapter (surah) of the Quran is capable of making you feel better and more at ease, Surah Ad-Duha has proved to be one of the most powerful Surahs to achieve this.

If you’re lying down trying to relax or get rid of some negative thoughts or stress, listening to Surah Ad-Duha will be a good option for you to feel better instantly.

Some scholars feel that Surah Ad-Duha is the greatest chapter to reflect on in order to rid oneself of bad thoughts and worries. It was revealed during a period of depression for Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

In this chapter, Allah SWT invites Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) to contemplate the wonderful beauty that each day brings with it at the dawn. According to scientific evidence, people who focus on nature’s beauty in the mornings and enjoy its magnificence are more inclined to be optimistic and stress-free.

“By the morning sunlight, and the night when it falls still!”

(Ad-Duha 1-2)

Following that, Allah tells Prophet Mohammad that He has not abandoned him and reminds him of His blessings.

“Your Lord [O Prophet] has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful [of you]. And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one. And ]surely] your Lord will give so much to you that you will be pleased. Did He not find you as an orphan then sheltered you? Did He not find you unguided then guided you? And did He not find you needy then satisfied your needs?”

(Ad-Duha 3-8)

The chapter concludes with a call to pity and charity toward the weak. The last verse, in particular, invites us all to proclaim Allah’s blessings given to us, which is a great thing to think about whenever you feel bad.

“So do not oppress the orphan, nor repulse the beggar. And proclaim the blessings of your Lord.”

(Ad-Duha 9-11)

What Dua Should I Make If I Can’t Sleep?

If you’re lying down and can’t fall asleep, you can recite some duas in order to help you relax and drift off.

According to Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) prescription to insomnia, he taught us these blessed words to say if we have trouble sleeping:

“O Allah, O You who are the Lord of the seven heavens and whatever they shelter, and the earth and whatever they contain, and You who are the Lord of devils and whomsoever they mislead, You be my Guardian-Protector against the evils of all of Your creatures; guard me against their intrusions and invasions. Noble is the one who enjoys Your protection and Glorified is Your Name.”

(Sunan Tirmidhi)

Arabic Transliteration:

“allahumma rabi al samawat alsabe wA ma azalat, wa rabu alaridin wa ma aqaltu, wa rabba al shayatin wa ma adaltu, kun li jaran min shari khalqaka kulluhum jami’an an yufarit alayya ahid minhum aw an yabghi alayy, eiz jarik w jala thanawuh w la ilahhan ghayruk w la ilaha ilaa anta.”

Another dua our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to make is:

“O Allah the stars have gone far away and the eyes are rested. You are Alive and Infinite, You do not slumber nor does sleep overtake You. Oh, Alive and the Everlasting One, grant me rest tonight and let my eyes sleep (close).”

Arabic Transliteration

allahumma gharat alnujum wa hada’at aleuyun wa anta hay qayuwm. la takhudhuk sinatu wala naum ya hay ya qayuwm ahdi layli wa anim eayni
