The Benefits of Becoming A Hafiz

Hafiz (plural: Huffaz): is someone who memorizes the whole Quran.

The name both means “memorizer” and “guardian” since Huffaz preserve Quran when they memorize it.

To be called Hafiz you need to be tested by reciting the whole Quran in one or more sessions. Huffaz also make sure they revise Quran every once in a while not to forget it.

Hafiz has an exceptional reputation among the Islamic community. They even have the right to use that nickname before their actual names to demonstrate that they memorized Quran.

Abdullah ibn Amr narrated that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“The Hafiz of Quran (a person who has memorized Quran) will be told on the day of Judgment: Recite and rise in status, recite as you used to recite in the world, for your status will be at the last verse that you recite.”

Huffaz are required to grasp and thoroughly interpret the Quranic text, which means they know every detail mentioned in the Quran since Quran Hifz involves more than merely memorizing the words.

This qualifies them to be experts in the teachings of Islam and to properly implement them. Every Muslim respects whoever holds this position since we are obliged to understand and learn the Quran as long as we live.

“Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who possess intellect take admonition.”

(Surah Az-Zumar)

What Is Special About A Hafiz?

As per the previous Hadith, Muslims believe that whoever memorizes the Quran and acts on it will be immensely rewarded and honored by Allah, and their standing in Paradise will rise to a level corresponding with what they memorized of Allah’s Holy Book.

Quran Hafiz is someone who has memorized 114 Surahs (chapters) and 6,236 verses from the Quran (comprising some 80,000 words).

Impressive, right? What’s more admirable than that is the person who memorizes this much information does it for the sake of Allah in order to gain His blessings.

Hafiz also falls under what Prophet Muhammed called “the best”. Since Hafiz memorizes Quran, they are considered a learner and can teach it to other people.

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”

Does Memorizing Quran Improve Memory?

Yes, Quran memorizing improves your memory. It’s been proved by multiple scientific research findings that Quran memorization strengthens your memory, helps elderly people with better memory, and boosts your IQ level if you memorize it at a young age.

Dr. Haneen Jarrar, a child psychologist in the UAE, confirmed that Quran memorization doesn’t only enhance your memory, but it helps with your learning skills as well. It improves what they call “working memory”.

Working memory is a subset of short-term memory. It is the location where information is stored for a long enough period of time to be used again.

When presented with new information, the more the working memory’s ability to retain it, the more an individual can learn.

What Are The Benefits Of Memorizing Quran?

  1. You’ll be mentioned among angels.

“Whenever a group of people assembles in one of the Houses of Allah (Mosques), reciting the Book of Allah and studying it, tranquility descends upon them, Mercy covers them, angels surround them and Allah makes a mention of them among those who are with Him”

(Muslim)

  1. You gain a great deal of religious awareness that can fill your heart as a result of the Quran’s explanation of many spiritual aspects.

“A person who has nothing of the Quran in his heart is like a ruined house”

(At-Tirmidhi)

  1. You get to have all the answers. Quran is the more complete book on earth that explains how to deal with life and what awaits us in the afterlife as well. No question is unanswered in Quran
  1. You will receive limitless rewards from Allah for every letter you recite and memorize.

Each letter of the Quran is linked with a good deed, and a good deed earns a tenfold return, which Allah doubles for anyone He wills.

“Whoever recites a letter of the Book of Allah will be credited with a good deed and a good deed is multiplied into ten. I do not say that [the word:] “Alif Lam Meem” is counted as one letter. Rather, Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter and Meem is one letter”

(At-Tirmidhi)

  1. You’ll learn Islam from its origins. Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to teach him Islam, which he later taught his people, then it spread to the whole world.
  1. It will constantly purify your heart.

“The hearts rust just as iron rusts, and indeed they are polished through the recitation of the Quran.”

  1. It connects you with Allah in the best way. We are continuously seeking ways to enhance our morals and interact with Allah, our Creator, and there is no greater method than through His own words.
  1. Quran will come as an intercessor on The Last Day to ask Allah to forgive us for our sins. Abu Umamah -may Allah be pleased with him- narrated that the Prophet (peace Be Upon Him) said:

“Recite the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection”

(Muslim)

What Is The Reward For Parents Of Hafiz?

Parents who encourage their child to memorize Quran gets immense blessings from Allah. When your child memorizes Quran, they benefit themselves, the whole Islamic population (Ummah), and you. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Whoever recites the Quran, learns it, and acts according to it will be given a crown of light to wear on the Day of Judgement whose light will be like the sun. His parents will be clothed in two garments that did not exist in this worldly life.”

(Al-Hakim, Ath-Thahabe)

The rewards are not just given in the afterlife, Allah gives His blessings to the child and you as long as you live and encourage them to be Hafiz.

In addition to the divine rewards, your child gets other benefits too.

They become more aware of the religion and how to treat you right, they stay away from sins and mistakes, and you’ll get a reward for every time they do something right that corresponds with the Quran teachings.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Whoever guides to something good is like the one who does it.”

(Sahih Muslim)

When you encourage your child to learn and memorize Quran, you’re doing them, and yourself, the favor of a lifetime. As there’s nothing more beneficial to the child more than the proper upbringing on good things, and what’s better than the Holy Quran?

Allah entrusted us with children and commanded us to guide and protect them from deviation and sin, as we’ll be held accountable for how we raised them.

Prophet Muhammad also described parents as “guardians” to highlight their role in looking after their children and make sure they are raised right.

“All of you are guardians and all of you will be questioned concerning those under his guardianship and the man is the guardian over his family, and he will be questioned concerning those under his guardianship…”

(Al Bukhari and Muslim)
