Reading the holy Quran will make you feel peace of mind, but which is the best surah for that? let’s find out.

Surah Yusuf

This Surah discusses the story of the prophet Yusuf and the hardships he went through. It tells the story of patience, faith, and Iman.

It shows us how Yusuf had faith in Allah no matter what happened to him. And how Allah responded to his prayers.

It is the surah number 12 in the holy Quran. It was revealed to the prophet after the year of sorrow.

The surah was revealed to the prophet to comfort him. And from it, we learn how to deal with life’s problems and never give up.

From the surah, we can see how the prophet Yusuf dealt with sadness, pain, and suffering without giving up to the surrounding circumstances.

Prophet Yusuf didn’t lose his faith in Allah even though he went through a lot. His brothers left him in a well. A group of people found him and sold him, then he was imprisoned.

At the same time, his father was grieving for losing him. Yet he didn’t lose hope in Allah that his son will come back to him once more.

Allah said in the holy Quran:

“He said, ‘I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know. O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair, not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.’”

Allah said:

“And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, ‘O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it a reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.’”

This surah is one of the best surahs to read for peace of mind. Reading it makes all the anxiety go away. And all your stress will go right away. If you are planning to read Quran all night, or at least for part of it, check out our guide to the best Surahs to read at night here.

Surah Al-Kahf for peace of mind.

Surah Al-Kahf is the surah number 18 in the holy Quran. With 110 verses that carry many lessons for us. In English, it is called “the cave”.

It talks about faith (the people of the cave), wealth (the story of the man who had two beautiful gardens), power (the story of Dhul-Qarnayn), and knowledge (the story of Moses and khidr).

From all these beautiful stories we learn how to deal with life’s obstacles and tests. We learn that we should be patient, thankful, and humble.

We understand that having faith in Allah will solve all our problems. And know that he will be there for us to protect us and guide us no matter what happens.

Allah said in the Quran:

Say, “If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.”

From this verse, we learn that Allah’s power has no limits. No matter what happens rely on Allah and he will save you.

So, if you’re feeling anxious reading surah Kahf will heal your heart and make you have peace of mind.

“[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”

In this verse, the people of the cave ran away from their people and hid in the cave. Asking Allah to guide them and have mercy on them.

As you can see, they had a strong faith in Allah. Knowing that he is the only one who can help them. And like they did we should do the same. Ask Allah for his guidance and give you the strength to overcome this feeling.

Surah Ar-Rahman.

Al-Rahman is one of the 99 names of Allah. The surah starts with the word Rahman and then shows us the countless blessings that Allah gave us. Also how heaven will be. It’s the surah number 55 with 78 verses.

Allah said in the holy Quran:

“The Most Merciful taught the Quran, created man, [and] taught him eloquence.”

In this verse, Allah tells us how the Quran in itself is a guidance and blessing to us. It is one of the best surahs to read for peace of mind. As it will ease your heart and give you peace of mind, making you feel better.

Surah Ar-Rahman shows us how many blessings we have in our lives. It talks about the rewards of the believers, what will happen to the disbelievers, and the day of judgment.

In this surah, there’s a verse that is repeated 31 times, and it says:

“then which of the bounties of your Lord do you both (man and jinn) deny”.

This verse shows us that no one on earth whether humans or Jinn can deny the many blessings we were given.

Here’s a hadith that shows the significance of surah al-Rahman.

It was narrated that:

“The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) went to the companions and recited Surah Rahman but they were all quiet. He told them that he went to the Jinn and recited it to them and they were responsive. And when he would recite the verses ‘And which of the favors of the Lord will you deny’ the jinn would respond ‘There is nothing among your bounties that we can deny, all praises belong to Allah”.

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Everything has an adornment, and the adornment of the Quran is Surah Ar Rahman.”

When you read this surah and read about heaven and the many beautiful things and reward in there you will feel happy and all the stress and anxiety will go away.

Reading this surah makes us more thankful and know that Allah can make anything come true. Which in turn gives us peace of mind.

The Quran brings comfort and peace to the one who reads it but does the Quran do the same when we read it for the dead? Is it permissible to read the Quran for the dead? That’s what we will find out in this article.

So, Can you read the Quran for the dead? Yes, it is okay to read the Quran for the dead, as our prophet instructed us to read surah ya seen for the dead at any time. And also scholars said that it is permissible to read the Quran for the dead at the time of burial and after.

Can you read the Quran for the dead?

man with quran on mat to answer can you read the quran for the dead

According to scholars, it is okay to read the Quran for a deceased person. That’s whether at the burial time, at the time of death, after at the grave, or any other place at the time of burial or after.

Some Maliki scholars say that it’s not liked to read the Quran at the graveside. However, Sheikh al-dardir said:

“The later scholars from the Malikis maintained that there is no harm in reciting the Qur’an, making remembrance of Allah and dedicating the reward to a deceased; the reward for these acts reaches him by the will of Allah.”

According to Maqal ibn Yasser, the prophet said:

“Read Ya Seen over your dead”

(Reported by Ahmed, Abu Dawud, and ibn Majah.)

From this hadith, we understand that the prophet told us to read surah Yaseen for the dead at any time.

Ibn ‘Umar narrated that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:

“When any of you dies, do not delay [his burial] but hasten to take him to his grave. Afterward, read al-Fatiha at his head and the closing verses of Surah al-Baqarah at his feet ”

[Reported by al-Tabarani and al-Baihaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman. Ibn Hajar declared it fair].

Another phrasing:

There is another phrasing of the hadith saying to read the beginning of surah al-Baqarah instead of the Fatiha.

According to Anas, the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever enters a cemetery and recites (Ya Seen), Allah will mitigate the punishment of the grave dwellers, and he will receive a reward equal to the number of deceased therein” [Reported by ‘Abdul ‘Aziz the student of al-Khalal. Ibn Qudama mentions it in al-Mughni].

Scholars’ opinion about reading Quran for a deceased:

Most scholars say that it is okay to read the Quran for the dead. They also talk about the importance of reading the Quran for the deceased.

The Hanbali scholar, ibn Qudama al-Maqdisi said:

“Any act of worship the reward of which is dedicated to a deceased Muslim will benefit him by the will of Allah …

Some scholars contend that if the Qur’an is read at the side of the deceased or its reward is dedicated to him, the reader receives the reward and the deceased will gain the mercy of its recitation …

The opinion of our school which we have previously mentioned is the unanimity of Muslims [on the permissibility of donating the reward of Qur`anic recitations to the deceased]; Muslims in every place and age have gathered to recite the Qur`an and dedicated its reward to their dead without any criticism” [Al-Mughni, 2/225].

Imam An-Nawawiyy (d. 676 H.) said in his book Al-AdhKar:

“It has been reported to us through Sunan Al-Bayhaqiyy with a chain of narration classified as Hasan, that Ibn `Umar regarded the recitation of the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah and its ending upon the grave of a newly buried Muslim as a mustahabb (likeable) matter”.

He also said:

“Ash-Shafi`iyy and his companions in his madhhab said that it is a mustahabb (likeable) matter to recite some of the Qur’an upon the grave of a Muslim. And they added that if the Qur’an was recited in its entirety then that would also be a rewardable matter”.

Al-Qurtubiyy said in his book At-Tadhkirah:

“The source of the ruling in this matter is the confirmed reward of the charity which reaches the dead. By the same token, the recitation of the Qur’an and the supplications to Allah for forgiveness for the dead reach him”.

Sheikh al-‘Uthmani said in his book:

“Scholars unanimously agreed that asking forgiveness for the deceased, supplicating for him, and the reward of giving out in charity, performing Hajj and manumitting [slaves] on his behalf reaches and benefits him and that it is recommended to recite the Qur’an at the grave.”

As we can see scholars agreed on the permissibility of reading the Quran for the dead in addition to making a hajj for the deceased. Hajj includes praying which in turn includes reading the Quran.

Benefits of Reading Surah Yaseen for the Dead:

Reading Quran for the dead, charity, remembering Allah, and making hajj on behalf of the dead are all permissible. They have many benefits for the dead.

Now we will talk about the benefits of reading surah ya seen for them.

Grant Forgiveness for the dead:

As Muslims, we all know that we should read surah ya seen for the dead to bring them Allah’s forgiveness.

Whenever we lose someone we read surah ya see not just at the time of burial, we read it regularly at least once a week and ask Allah to grant his mercy to our loved ones.

Allah says in surah Yaseen the following:اِنَّمَا تُنْذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّكْرَ وَخَشِيَ الرَّحْمٰنَ بِالْغَيْبِۚ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِمَغْفِرَةٍ وَّاَجْرٍ كَرِيْمٍ

“Indeed, you only warn those who will follow the warning and who fear the Most Merciful God, even though they do not see Him. So give them good tidings with forgiveness and a noble reward.” (QS 36:11)

From this verse we understand that reading the Quran everyday has many benefits for us.

Lighten the way for the Dead:

Reading Surah ya seen will also make the path easier for our loved ones once in the day of judgment.

“Indeed, We are the ones who bring the dead to life, and We are the ones who record what they have done and the traces they have left. And everything We collect in a clear Book (Lauh Mahfuzh).” (QS 36:12)

Quran is a Great Savior for the dead:

Us Muslims we read Surah ya seen for our loved ones wishing that it reaches them brings them peace and comfort.

The Quran may bring happiness to the dead and may bring them Allah’s forgiveness and mercy. Any good deeds we do on the behalf of the dead will reach them and they will be rewarded.

اِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا وَمَتَاعًا اِلٰى حِيْنٍ – ٤٤

“but (We saved them) because of great mercy from Us and to give pleasure to live for a certain time.” (QS 36:44)

Pure the Soul from any mistakes:

As human beings, we make mistakes, many mistakes but we always ask Allah for his mercy and forgiveness. Reading Surah Yaseen for the dead wash them from the mistakes they did and purify their souls.

We read surah ya seen and ask Allah to accept our dua to grant forgiveness and mercy for the once that we have no longer with us.

“Verily I have believed in your Lord; then listen to my (confession of faith). It was said (to him), “Enter to heaven.” He (the man) said, “It would be good if my people knew, what causes my Lord to forgive me and make me one of those who have been glorified.” (QS 36:25-27)

Lightened the Grave:

Reading surah ya seen will not only pure their souls but also lighten their graves. We know how dark the grave is, that’s why we ask Allah to bring light to the grave of our deceased ones, and that’s what the surah ya seen do for them.

“And (Allah) who created the heavens and the earth, is able to recreate the like (their bodies which have been destroyed)? True, and He is the Creator, the All-Knowing.” (QS 36:81)

فَسُبْحٰنَ الَّذِيْ بِيَدِهٖ مَلَكُوْتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَّاِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُوْنَ ࣖ – ٨٣

“So Glory be to Him in whose hand is dominion over all things and to Him you will be returned.” (QS 36:83)

In the end, we wish that Allah grants his mercy and forgiveness to our deceased loved ones.

Dinosaurs, The epic creatures with small hands. Whenever we think of dinosaurs we imagine a Jurassic Park movie with gigantic creatures running around cities smashing skyscrapers and jeopardizing humanity or the human race. Well, science fiction is enjoyable but even though all these movies are from our imaginations, dinosaurs are very real and they used to roam this planet millions of years ago.

You are probably thinking and wondering and questioning, if they really existed does Islam mention them? What did God say about them and why did he abolish them from earth? And most importantly, does the Quran mention dinosaurs?

So Does The Quran Mention Dinosaurs?

No. The Quran does not mention dinosaurs. Neither does sunnah. Prophet Muhammed never spoke of them as well. And even ancient civilizations seem to know nothing about them or any other religion.

What are Dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs are non-avian reptiles that used to live on our planet about 200 million years ago. They were huge and we only have their fossils as in their bones but have no idea what their exterior figure was like. We use science and technology to reach predictions.

When did we discover dinosaurs?

In 1824, English geologist William Buckland announced he discovered the remains of a New Animal. Back then scientists didn’t know what kind of an animal it was and knew nothing about the diverse group of Dinosaurs.

When Did Dinosaurs Live?

Dinosaurs lived about 243-200 million years ago. This is according to their fossils as it is the only remaining evidence of their existence.

What does Islam say about  Dinosaurs?

quran and dinosaur side by side to answer does the quran mention dinosaurs

Islam says nothing about dinosaurs. Neither the Quran nor the sunnah speaks about them. However, God mentioned that before he had created Adam for earth there were creatures that lived according to the Angels that questioned him in surah Al Baqara

“Waith qala rabbuka lilmalaikati innee jaAAilun fee alardi khaleefatan qaloo atajAAalu feeha man yufsidu feeha wayasfiku alddimaa wanahnu nusabbihu bihamdika wanuqaddisu laka qala innee aAAlamu ma la taAAlamoona”

English Translation

“Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: “I will create a vicegerent on earth.” They said: “Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?” He said: “I know what ye know not.”

This may indicate that it was dinosaurs that the Angels spoke of. However, there are a lot of animal species that the Quran never mentioned whether alive or extinct. Like giraffes, butterflies, or DoDo birds.

Why did Allah kill all Dinosaurs?

It is unclear until today how the dinosaurs went extinct. The most common theory is that it was due to a comet that hit the earth. It is more likely that God ended dinosaurs so that the earth may be ready for mankind. For as dinosaurs could have easily hunted down Adam and Eve and crushed them.

Are all Dinosaurs extinct?

Yes. All Dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years. There are no living Dinosaurs but birds are considered Dinosaurs descendants.

What Does the Word Dinosaur mean?

It comes from the Greek name Dinosauria which means terrible lizards. The scientist Richard Owen gave them that name in the nineteenth century.

Who lived before Dinosaurs?

There have been fossils of some primitive creatures who date back before dinosaurs. They were bacteria-like creatures or other primitive creatures.

Why didn’t the Quran mention dinosaurs?

Nobody knows why God never mentioned dinosaurs. But keep in mind that Muhammed and his people at that time did not know of dinosaurs, nor did any ancient civilization so it would have been weird if God spoke of something that wasn’t yet revealed to mankind.

Did the dinosaurs exist?

Yes, Dinosaurs existed. The proof that we have is that we found many dinosaur fossils. We found fossils of their skulls, body, tails, and full dinosaurs were discovered. So there is no doubt that they existed back in an ancient geological era.

Should a Muslim believe in dinosaurs?

It doesn’t really matter. Believing or not believing in dinosaurs is quite irrelevant to Islam. Yet, it is important to know that science has proven its existence as a fact. So why not?

Does God Mention Other Creatures in the Quran?

Yes, God mentions many creatures in the Quran who are not humans or animals. He speaks of them extensively, In almost Every surah. Creatures like devils, and  Angels. A proper Muslim should believe in everything God mentioned in the Quran.

Do any holy books or religious texts mention Dinosaurs?

No. Dinosaurs are not mentioned in any holy or sacred text.  Humans first knew about dinosaurs when their fossils were discovered in 1824.

When Did Dinosaurs Go Extinct?

About 65 million years ago. They lived on earth for about 165 million years.

Did Adam and Eve Knew Dinosaurs?

It is unlikely that any human might have seen a living dinosaur. Humans have likely appeared on earth five to seven million years ago. Dinosaurs died 65 million years ago. There is about a sixty million-year-old gap between the last dinosaur and the first human.

In conclusion, whether you believe in God, evolution, or universe, or anything, dinosaurs were the history of the earth. They existed, they were diverse and variable and one thing we know for sure is that most of them were huge. No religion or holy book mentioned them and no holy book ever denied them.

Whether or not they were exactly how we imagined them on the big screen is something we will never know. Yet science has uncovered many interesting facts about Dinosaurs and keeps unraveling more and more each day.

Some interesting facts about Dinosaurs :

  • They Laid Eggs
  • There were 700 species of dinosaurs
  • They Lived on All continents.
  • They probably died when an asteroid hit the earth.
  • Their name means “terrible lizards” in Greek.
  • They had small hands.

Every year, hundreds of students learn and memorize the Quran, as well as develop the ability to interpret and explain it, hoping to get the benefits of Hafiz Quran and to elevate to the highest levels.

The Quran is maybe the only religious or secular text that millions of individuals from all cultures and nations have memorized perfectly.

So, what makes Quran memorization (Hifz) so appealing? Read on to know more

The Benefits of Becoming A Hafiz

Man reading Muhaf to show the benefits of hafiz quran

Hafiz (plural: Huffaz): is someone who memorizes the whole Quran.

The name both means “memorizer” and “guardian” since Huffaz preserve Quran when they memorize it.

To be called Hafiz you need to be tested by reciting the whole Quran in one or more sessions. Huffaz also make sure they revise Quran every once in a while not to forget it.

Hafiz has an exceptional reputation among the Islamic community. They even have the right to use that nickname before their actual names to demonstrate that they memorized Quran.

Abdullah ibn Amr narrated that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“The Hafiz of Quran (a person who has memorized Quran) will be told on the day of Judgment: Recite and rise in status, recite as you used to recite in the world, for your status will be at the last verse that you recite.”

Huffaz are required to grasp and thoroughly interpret the Quranic text, which means they know every detail mentioned in the Quran since Quran Hifz involves more than merely memorizing the words.

This qualifies them to be experts in the teachings of Islam and to properly implement them. Every Muslim respects whoever holds this position since we are obliged to understand and learn the Quran as long as we live.

“Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who possess intellect take admonition.”

(Surah Az-Zumar)

What Is Special About A Hafiz?

As per the previous Hadith, Muslims believe that whoever memorizes the Quran and acts on it will be immensely rewarded and honored by Allah, and their standing in Paradise will rise to a level corresponding with what they memorized of Allah’s Holy Book.

Quran Hafiz is someone who has memorized 114 Surahs (chapters) and 6,236 verses from the Quran (comprising some 80,000 words).

Impressive, right? What’s more admirable than that is the person who memorizes this much information does it for the sake of Allah in order to gain His blessings.

Hafiz also falls under what Prophet Muhammed called “the best”. Since Hafiz memorizes Quran, they are considered a learner and can teach it to other people.

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”

Does Memorizing Quran Improve Memory?

Yes, Quran memorizing improves your memory. It’s been proved by multiple scientific research findings that Quran memorization strengthens your memory, helps elderly people with better memory, and boosts your IQ level if you memorize it at a young age.

Dr. Haneen Jarrar, a child psychologist in the UAE, confirmed that Quran memorization doesn’t only enhance your memory, but it helps with your learning skills as well. It improves what they call “working memory”.

Working memory is a subset of short-term memory. It is the location where information is stored for a long enough period of time to be used again.

When presented with new information, the more the working memory’s ability to retain it, the more an individual can learn.

What Are The Benefits Of Memorizing Quran?

  1. You’ll be mentioned among angels.

“Whenever a group of people assembles in one of the Houses of Allah (Mosques), reciting the Book of Allah and studying it, tranquility descends upon them, Mercy covers them, angels surround them and Allah makes a mention of them among those who are with Him”

(Muslim)

  1. You gain a great deal of religious awareness that can fill your heart as a result of the Quran’s explanation of many spiritual aspects.

“A person who has nothing of the Quran in his heart is like a ruined house”

(At-Tirmidhi)

  1. You get to have all the answers. Quran is the more complete book on earth that explains how to deal with life and what awaits us in the afterlife as well. No question is unanswered in Quran
  1. You will receive limitless rewards from Allah for every letter you recite and memorize.

Each letter of the Quran is linked with a good deed, and a good deed earns a tenfold return, which Allah doubles for anyone He wills.

“Whoever recites a letter of the Book of Allah will be credited with a good deed and a good deed is multiplied into ten. I do not say that [the word:] “Alif Lam Meem” is counted as one letter. Rather, Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter and Meem is one letter”

(At-Tirmidhi)

  1. You’ll learn Islam from its origins. Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to teach him Islam, which he later taught his people, then it spread to the whole world.
  1. It will constantly purify your heart.

“The hearts rust just as iron rusts, and indeed they are polished through the recitation of the Quran.”

  1. It connects you with Allah in the best way. We are continuously seeking ways to enhance our morals and interact with Allah, our Creator, and there is no greater method than through His own words.
  1. Quran will come as an intercessor on The Last Day to ask Allah to forgive us for our sins. Abu Umamah -may Allah be pleased with him- narrated that the Prophet (peace Be Upon Him) said:

“Recite the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection”

(Muslim)

What Is The Reward For Parents Of Hafiz?

Parents who encourage their child to memorize Quran gets immense blessings from Allah. When your child memorizes Quran, they benefit themselves, the whole Islamic population (Ummah), and you. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Whoever recites the Quran, learns it, and acts according to it will be given a crown of light to wear on the Day of Judgement whose light will be like the sun. His parents will be clothed in two garments that did not exist in this worldly life.”

(Al-Hakim, Ath-Thahabe)

The rewards are not just given in the afterlife, Allah gives His blessings to the child and you as long as you live and encourage them to be Hafiz.

In addition to the divine rewards, your child gets other benefits too.

They become more aware of the religion and how to treat you right, they stay away from sins and mistakes, and you’ll get a reward for every time they do something right that corresponds with the Quran teachings.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Whoever guides to something good is like the one who does it.”

(Sahih Muslim)

When you encourage your child to learn and memorize Quran, you’re doing them, and yourself, the favor of a lifetime. As there’s nothing more beneficial to the child more than the proper upbringing on good things, and what’s better than the Holy Quran?

Allah entrusted us with children and commanded us to guide and protect them from deviation and sin, as we’ll be held accountable for how we raised them.

Prophet Muhammad also described parents as “guardians” to highlight their role in looking after their children and make sure they are raised right.

“All of you are guardians and all of you will be questioned concerning those under his guardianship and the man is the guardian over his family, and he will be questioned concerning those under his guardianship…”

(Al Bukhari and Muslim)

As to the Koran, it consists exclusively of the revelation or commands which the Prophet professed, to have received from time, as a message direct from God; and which under divine direction, the Prophet delivered to those about him.

Every syllable of the Koran is of divine origin, eternal and ‘uncreated’ as the Deity Himself. It is one of the Islamic arguments against the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, that they are not exclusively oracles professing to proceed from the mouth of God.

The Prophet him-self neither read nor wrote. His being an illiterate man, enhances the marvel of his revelation.

At the moment of inspiration or shortly after, each passage was recited by the Prophet in the presence of friends or followers, and was generally committed to writing by someone amongst them, at the time or afterwards upon palm-leaves, leather, stones, or such other rude material as conveniently came to hand. These divine messages continued throughout the twenty-three years of his prophetic life, so that the last portion was not received till near the time of his death.

The Koran, being the divine revelation and the corner stone of Islam, the recital of a passage from it formed an essential part of daily prayer, public and private; and its perusal and repetition were considered to be a great privilege.

The preservation of the various chapters during the life–time of the Prophet, was not altogether dependent on their being committed to writing.

The Koran was committed to memory by almost every adherent of Islam, and the extent, to which it could be recited, was one of the chief sources of distinction, in the early stages of Islam. Amongst a crowd of warrior martyrs, he who had been the most versed in the Koran, was honoured with the first burial.

The person who in any company could most faithfully repeat the Koran, was ipso facto entitled to conduct the public prayers, and in certain cases to pecuniary rewards.

The retentive faculty of the early Arabs favoured the task; and it was applied with all the ardour of an awakened spirit, to the Koran. Several of the Prophet’s followers could during his life–time repeat with scrupulous accuracy, the whole as then in use. Four or five such persons are named; and several others also who could very nearly repeat the whole before the Prophet’s death.

“However retentive the Arab memory, remarks Sir William Muir, we should still have regarded with distrust a transcript made entirely from that source. But there is good reason for believing, that many fragmentary copies, embracing amongst them the whole Koran, or nearly the whole were during his life–time made by the Prophet’s followers.

“Such as the condition of the next during Mohammed’s life time, and such it remained for about a year after his death, imprinted upon the hearts of his people, and fragmentary transcripts increasing daily”

Further the same writer states: “The contents and arrangement of the Koran speak forcibly for its authenticity. All the fragments have, with artless simplicity, been joined together…

Even the frailties of the Prophet, as noticed by the Deity, have with evident faithful-ness, been entered in the Koran…

In fine, we posses every internal guarantee of confidence (namely in the authenticity of the Koran, as it exists in the present copies).

…. There is otherwise every security, internal and external, that we possess that text which Mohammed himself gave forth and used.

So carefully, indeed, has it been preserved that there are no variations of importance– we might almost say no variations at all– to be found in the innumerable copies scattered throughout the vast bound of the Empire of Islam.

Yet, but One Koran has been current amongst them; and the consentaneous use by all of the same Scripture, in every age to the present day, is an irrefragable proof, that we have now before us the very text prepared by command of the Caliph Othman who was murdered some time after the compilation of the Koran.

There is probably in the world no other work, which has remained twelve centuries (1861), with so pure a text.1 This is only because the various revelations in the Koran, regarding its divine nature, and its remaining forever free from corruption or contradistinction, are rightly confirmed. Here are a few verses bearing on this point:

“We have surely sent down the Koran; and we will certainly preserve the same from corruption.

“This Koran could not have been composed by any, except God; but it is a confirmation of that which was revealed before it, and an explanation of the scripture; there is no doubt therefore; sent down from the Lord of all creatures.

Will they say, (Mohammed) hath forged it? Answer, Bring therefore a chapter like unto it; and call whom ye may (to your assistance) besides God, if ye speak truth.”

“Say, Verily if men and genie were purposely assembled, that they might produce (a book) like this Koran, they could not produce one like unto it, although they assisted each other. And we have variously propounded unto men in this Koran, every kind of figurative argument; but the greater part of men refuse to receive it, merely out of infidelity.”

Belief in God is best represented by the following formula which every Sunni, or orthodox Moslem must profess sincerely: God is one and has had no partner; Singular, without any like Him; Uniform having no contrary; Separate, having no equal; Ancient, having no first; Eternal, having no beginning; Everlasting, having no end; Ever–existing, without termination; Perpetual and Constant, with neither interruption nor termination; Ever qualified with the attributes of Supreme Greatness; nor is He bound to be determined by lapse of ages or times.

Belief in God; What God is not

God is not a formed body; nor a measurable substance; neither does He resemble bodies, either in their being measurable or divisible. Neither is He a substance, nor do substances exist in Him; neither is He an accidental form,  nor do accidentals exist in Him.

He is not like anything that exists, neither does anything resemble Him. He is not determined by dimensions, nor contained within bounds; nor is He

(1)          As to His obvious existence.

(2)          As to His reality

surrounded by sides; nor is He comprised within the heavens or earth. He sits upon the throne, after the manner which He Himself has described, and in that same sense which He Himself meant: it is a sitting, far removed from any notion of contact, or resting upon, or local situation; but both the throne itself, and whatsoever supports it, are sustained by the goodness of His power, and are conquered by His will. He is above His throne and above all things, but so above as at the same time not be a whit nearer to the throne and the heaven or farther from the earth.

God is exalted by infinite degrees above the throne, no less than He is exalted above the earth, and at the same time, He is near to everything that has being; nay, he is nearer to men than their jugular veins, and is witness to everything: though His nearness is not like the nearness of bodies; neither is His essence like the essence of bodies.

He does not exist in anything, nor does anything exist in Him; but He is too exalted, to be contained in any place, and too Holy, to be determined by time; for He existed before He created time and place; and He is now as he always existed.

He is also distinct from the creatures by His attributes, neither is there anything besides Himself in His essence, nor is His essence in any other besides Him.

He is too Holy to be subject to change, or any local motion; neither do any accidents dwell in Him, nor any contingencies befall Him; but He abides through all generations with His glorious attributes, free from all dissolution.

As to the attribute of perfection, He wants no addition of perfection. As to being, He is known to exist by the apprehension of the understanding, and seen as He is by the eyes, through a favour which will be vouchsafed out of His mercy and grace, to the holy in the eternal mansion, completing their joy by vision of His glorious presence.

Allah’s Hearing and Sight

Allah (God)–praised by His name–hears and sees, and hears and sees. No audible sound, no matter how still, escapes His hearing. Nothing visible is so small as to escape His sight, for distance is no major obstacle to His hearing, nor darkness to His sight.

Allah sees without a pupil or eyelid, listens without a passage or ear, knows without a brain, executes His actions without the aid of any corporeal limb, and produces without any instrument, for His qualities are not like those of men, nor is His nature like theirs.

God’s Word

God commands, forbids promises, and threatens with an immortal word that exists in His essence. It is not like the creature’s expression, nor does it consist of a voice arising from the commotion of the air and the clash of bodies; nor does it consist of letters divided by the joining together of the lips or the motion of the tongue.

The Quran, the Law, the Gospel, and the Psalter are all books that Allah sent down to His Apostles. Indeed, the Quran is read with tongues, written in manuscripts, and held in hearts. However, since it exists in the essence of Allah, it is not subject to alienation and division as it is transferred into the hearts and the paper.

Thus, Moses learned Allah’s message without the use of a voice or a message. And that these are His characteristics. He lives, knows, wills, listens, sees, and communicates through life, knowledge, will, hearing, sight, and speech, not through His simple essence.

God’s Works

Allah–praised be His name–exists in such a way that none else has any being but Him, only what is created by His action and flows from His justice, after the finest, most excellent, most ideal, and most just model.

Furthermore, He is wise in His works and only in His decrees. His justice, however, is not to be compared to that of men.

For instance, a man could be held to have acted unjustly by violating another’s property. However, since there is nothing that belongs to someone other than Allah, no wrong is imputable to Him, because He cannot be deemed to be meddling in anything that does not belong to Him.

All beings, with the exception of Himself, are His creation: genii, men, demons, angels, heaven, earth, animals, plants, matter, and their attributes. He made them through His power out of nothingness and took them into being because they were nothing at all, but He was the only one who existed from eternity and there was no one else with him.

Now, He created everything from the beginning for the manifestation of His strength and will, as well as the confirmation of His word, which has been true from the beginning of time.

They were neither needed nor desired. However, He openly proclaimed His pride in making, producing, and commanding without any duty or need.

Loving, kindness, favor and grace and beneficence, belong to Him. Whereas it is in His power to pour forth upon men a variety of torments and to afflict them with various kinds of sorrows and diseases. Should He do this, His justice would not be arraigned, nor would He be chargeable with injustice.

However, He honors those who worship Him for their obedience, on account of His promise and beneficence, rather than for their merit or need, for He is under no obligation to do anything, nor can any injustice be perceived in Him.

God’s worship is not merely the dictates of the intellect. He sent messengers to bear His orders, promises, and admonitions to men.

And He proved the veracity of these messengers by manifest miracles so that men are obligated to give credit to them in those things to which they relate.

“That both Mohammed and those among his followers who are reckoned orthodox, had and continue to have, just and true notions of God and His attributes, appears plain from the Quran itself and all the Mohammedan divines so that it would be loss of time, to refute those who suppose the God of Mohammed to be different from the true God, and only a fictitious deity or idol of his own creation.”

Mr. George Sale’s comment on the Islamic notion of Allah (God)

The Unity Of Allah

I will now give some examples from direct quotations from the Quran, bearing on the essence of Allah, this subject form such an important feature of the teachings of the religion of Islam:

“Say: He is God, the Singular, God the Lord, He begetteth not, nor is He begotten, nor is anything equal unto Him.”

 – Surah Al-Ikhlas

“Truly your God is but one, Lord of the Heavens and of the Earth, and of all that is between them, and Lord of the points*. God. There is no deity but He, Most excellent are His attributes.”

*Points: at which the sun rises and sets in the course of the year.

– Surah As-Saaffat

The fourth article of the Islamic creed is faith in all the Apostles of God.

A Moslem must believe, that the Merciful Creator sent in divers ages certain messengers or apostles, to reclaim mankind from infidelity and superstition, and to teach them the religion and laws of God and to give them good tidings and admonitions.

The number of these apostles is given as 313. Twenty-five of them must be remembered, since their names are distinctly given in the Koran; but it is not necessary to learn them by heart. The following are the names according to chronological order: –

Adam, Noah, Houd (Heber), Saleh (Methuselah) Lot, Abraham, Ishmail, Isaac, Jacob, Shu’aib (Jethro) Haroun (Aaron), Moses, David, Solomon, Ayoub (Job), Zulkifl (Isaiah), Younis (Jonah), Ilias, Alyas’aa (Elisha), Zacharias, Yahia (John the Baptist), Jesus and Mohammed.

If a Moslem is asked about anyone of these men, he must confess his belief, that he was an apostle of God.

Moslems must also believe, that the apostles of God were truthful faithful and intelligent, and that they delivered in full God’s message to their respective people. A Moslem must further believe that all apostles of God were, by their prophetic characteristics free from (1) telling lies, (2) committing unlawful deeds, (3) stupidity, laziness or cowardice (4) concealing any part of the message they were ordered to deliver.

The apostles of God were subject to the same human wants as the rest of mankind such as eating, drinking, sleeping, marrying, etc., they were also liable to ordinary but not disgusting maladies etc.

Since the nature, as well as the story, of Jesus Christ were matters of dispute between Christians and Moslems, I must give a summary of the Moslems’ belief in this respect, according to the teachings of the Koran and the interpretations of the Prophet.

Moslems hold, that Jesus Christ was the blessed Apostle of God who was sent to reclaim the people of Israel. He was a spirit from God, His messenger. His servant and prophet, illustrious in this world and in the next. He was miraculously born of the Virgin Mary. The Jews having spoken ill of Mary and charged her with unchastity, Jesus Christ, speaking in the cradle, vindicated his mother’s honour.

Jesus performed miracles by God’s power; giving life to a clay figure of a bird, healing the blind, curing the leper, quickening the dead, and causing a table of food to be brought down from Heaven.

He was sent by God, to confirm the law of Moses and to preach the Gospel to the people of Israel. He proclaimed his mission by many manifest signs, being confirmed by the Holy Spirit. He foretold the advent of another apostle to succeed him, named Periclete or Ahmed.

The Jews intended to crucify Jesus, but God saved him from the plot, took him up to Heaven, and stamped his likeness on a treacherous Jew who was apprehended and crucified in his stead.

It is the constant doctrine of the Moslems, that it was not Jesus who underwent crucifixion but someone else, resembling him in shape namely, Judas, who agreed with the Jews, to betray Jesus for some pieces of silver, and led those. who were sent to take him.

After the crucifixion of the wicked Judas, and the taking up of Jesus into Heaven, Christ, the Apostle of God, was sent down again to the earth, to comfort his mother and devoted disciples, and to tell them, how the Jews were deceived; and he was taken up a second time to Heaven.

The Extent of Allah’s Knowledge and Will

allah's infinite knowledge and will

God’s (Allah) living, powerful, mighty, omnipotent, not liable to any defect or impotence, neither slumbering nor sleeping nor being subject to decay or death. To Him belongs the Kingdom, the power, and the might.

His is the dominion, the excellence, the creation, and the command.

The heavens are folded in His hands, and all creatures are held within His grasp.

He is the sole creator of beings and producer of things, and He is the communicator of existence, and from Him, everything has its beginning.

He created men and their works, and destined their maintenance, and determined their lives.

Nothing that is possible can escape His grasp, nor can the vicissitudes of things elude His power. The effects of His might are innumerable, and the objects of His knowledge infinite.

Allah’s Knowledge

Allah knows all things that can be known, and comprehends whatsoever comes to pass, from the extremities of the earth to the highest heavens; even the weight of atoms cannot escape His knowledge, either in earth or heaven. He is aware of anything, whether concealed or visible.

He knows the number of leaves of the trees, of the gains of wheat and of sand. Events past and future are known to Him.

He knows what enters into the heart of man, and what he utters with his mouth.

Except for those to whom He has exposed them, He is the only one who is aware of the unseen occurrences. He is not prone to forgetfulness, negligence, or failure.

His knowledge is internal, not external to His essence.

Allah’s will

Allah wills for things to happen and takes care of all mishaps.

Nothing happens on this earth or in the heavens, no matter how big or small, good or bad, profitable or harmful, faith or infidelity, wisdom or ignorance, prosperity or adversity, increase or decrease, obedience or rebellion, except by His definite counsel and order, and His definite sentence and will.

It is Allah who gave all things their life or being, not the wink of him who sees, nor the subtlety of him who thinks, but it is He who gave all things their existence or being.

He is the Creator and Restorer, and the sole operator of what He pleases; no one can overturn His decree or postpone what He has decided.

There is no shelter for man from rebellion against Him, but only His support and mercy.

Even if men, genii, angels, and devils conspired to set one single atom in motion or stop it from moving, they would not be able to do so without His permission and approval.

His will is a part of His nature, along with the rest of His qualities, by which He decreed from eternity the life of those things that He decreed.

These things were created in their proper seasons according to His eternal will without any Before or After, and with an agreement both with His knowledge and will and not by methodizing thoughts or waiting for a proper time, for which reasons no one thing is in Him a hindrance from another.
