As Muslims we are instructed to be kind to animals, feed them, and take care of them, but what will happen to them on the day of judgment? If you have a pet, then you must be wondering whether your pet will go to heaven or not.

Dogs are lovely creatures, loyal, and loveable. But even though they are helpless creatures people tend to hurt them for fun. So, what will happen to them in the afterlife?

Do dogs go to heaven in Islam? No, dogs don’t go to heaven in Islam, but as said in the holy Quran and many hadiths, animals will be resurrected on the day of judgment, so that Allah takes justice for them. After that, they will be turned into dust.

If you want to know what happens to dogs in Islam, and what Islam says about pets’ death, then keep reading.

What does Islam Say about Pet’s death?

paws in clouds to answer Do Dogs Go to Heaven in Islam?

Allah said in the Holy Quran about the death of pets:

“There is no creature moving on the earth, nor a bird flying on its two wings. but they are all communities like you. We have not missed anything in the Book. Then, to their Lord all of them shall be gathered.” (Quran 6:38)

From the verse, we understand that all animals will be gathered on the day of judgment so that Allah takes justice to them.

“And when the wild beasts are gathered…” (Quran 81:5)

In another verse, we read what means:

The companion Abbas said about the above verse: “Everything will be gathered, even the flies.”

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the prophet of Allah (PBUH) said:

“All scores will be settled on the Day of Resurrection; even the hornless sheep will settle its scores with the horned sheep.” (Muslim)

More proof

In another narration of the hadith the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Allah will judge between His creation, jinn, humans, and animals. On that Day, the score will be settled between the hornless and the horned. until there are no outstanding issues left. Then Allah will say, ‘Be dust!’ At the point, the infidel will say, ‘Would that I was dust!’”

From the above hadith, we can conclude that all animals will be turned into dust after their scores are settled. Perhaps, the reason is that animals can’t be held accountable for their deeds and actions.

Therefore they won’t go to heaven or hell.

From this, we understand that dogs don’t go to heaven in Islam.

What happens to dogs in Islam?

Islam instructs all Muslims to be kind to dogs and animals in general. To feed and take care of them and not hurt them.

Did you know that there are chapters (surahs) in the Holy Quran that are named after some animals? That is right, their names are surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow), surah Al-An`am (The Cattle), surah An-Nahl (The Bee), surah Naml (The Ant), surah Al-`Ankabut (The Spider), and surah Al-Fil (The Elephant).

Allah said in the holy Quran:

“There is no creature moving on the earth, nor a bird flying on its two wings, but they are all communities like you. We have not missed anything in the Book. Then, to their Lord, all of them shall be gathered.” (Quran 6:38)

Why Allah has created Animals

Allah created animals to help us and for us to benefit from them, as Allah says in the holy Quran:

“And He created the cattle for you as a source of warmth, food, and many other benefits. They are also pleasing to you when you bring them home and when you take them out to graze. And they carry your loads to ˹distant˺ lands which you could not otherwise reach without great hardship. Surely your Lord is Ever Gracious, Most Merciful. ˹He also created˺ horses, mules, and donkeys for your transportation and adornment. And He creates what you do not know.” [surah Nahl: 5: 8]

Show Kindness to Animals

As Muslims, we should show them kindness and mercy, as we learned from our beloved prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

The prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whilst a man was walking on the road, he became very thirsty. He found a well so he went down into it and drank, then he came out. There he saw a dog that was panting and biting the ground out of thirst. The man said: this dog is feeling the same thirst that I felt. So, he went back down into the well and filled his shoe with water, then he held it in his mouth until he climbed back up, and he gave the water to the dog. Allah appreciated (his action) and forgave him.” The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, will we have reward with regard to these animals? He said: “In every living thing there is reward.”

The one who hurt an animal will go to hell, as the prophet told us about the woman who entered hell for mistreating a cat.

The prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said: “A woman entered the (Hell) Fire because of a cat which she had tied. She neither gave it food nor set it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3318, Book 59, Hadith 124, Vol. 4, Book 54, Hadith 535]

Conclusion.

Dogs don’t go to heaven in Islam, but all animals will be resurrected on the day of judgment to settle their scores. As Muslims we should be kind to animals, treat them well, feed them and show them mercy.

Anyone who mistreats an animal will go to hell, and the one who treats them well will be rewarded for it. remember, if you have a pet then be good to it.

Having a dog in Islam isn’t permissible unless they’re kept for farming or herding livestock, as our beloved prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Whoever keeps a dog, his reward for good deeds will decrease by one qeeraat every day, except dogs used for farming or herding livestock.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2322.]

But how about breeding and selling dogs? Is it haram to breed and sell dogs? Can you do it for hunting or watchdogs if it’s halal to keep them? Let’s find out.

Is it haram to breed and sell dogs?

puppies in a cage to answer is it haram to breed and sell dogs

There’re different opinions regarding the breeding, selling, and buying of dogs. Some of the earlier scholars said that it’s haram to breed and sell dogs of any kind.

While others allowed buying and selling dogs that are allowed in Islam like hunting and watchdogs, and forbade other kinds.

The Shafi`is, the Hanbalis, and the majority of Malikis agreed that it’s not allowed to sell and breed dogs (of any breeds, even hunting and watchdogs). They came up with their opinion based on the authentic Hadith that says:

“The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the lady who practices tattooing and the one who gets herself tattooed, and one who takes Riba (usury) and the one who gives it. He also prohibited taking money for dogs and the money earned by prostitution, and cursed the image-maker.‏” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Regarding the Hanafis madhab they permitted selling all kinds of dogs, except vicious dogs that bite people.

Ibn Qudamah said in his famous book Al-Mughni: “Selling dogs is not permitted, even if they are trained for hunting.

The scholars of the [Hanbali] madh-hab [school of Fiqh] agreed that selling dogs, regardless their kinds, is unacceptable. This opinion is held by Al-Hasan, Rabi`ah, Hammad, Al-Awza`i, Ash-Shafi`i and Dawud.

Abu Hurayrah disliked taking money for selling dogs, while Jabir ibn `Abdullah, `Ata’ and An-Nakh`i permitted taking money for that. According to one of Abu Hanifah’s narrations, it is permissible to sell all kinds of dogs and take money for selling them, except vicious dogs that bite people.

The Malikis disagreed on this matter; some of them said that it is not permissible, while others stated: dogs which are allowed to be bred are permitted to be sold, but this is not desirable.”

Breeding and selling dogs in hadith and sunnah.

There’re different hadiths that show that it is haram to breed and sell dogs in islam, here are some of them:

Abu Juhayfah narrated that:

“The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the price of a dog.” [Al-Bukhari (1944) narrated that]

Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari narrated that “the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the price of a dog, the wages of a prostitute and the fee of a fortuneteller.” [Al-Bukhari (2083) and Muslim (2930)]

‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that:

“The Messenger of Allah forbade the price of a dog, and if a person comes asking for the price of a dog, then fill his hand with dust.” Al-Hafiz said: Its isnad is sahih; it was classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Abi Dawud.” [Abu Dawud (3021)]

Abu Hurayrah narrated that:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“The price of a dog, the fee of a fortuneteller and the wages of a prostitute are not permissible.” Al-Hafiz said: its isnad is hasan. Al-Albani classed it as sahih in Sahih Abi Dawud.” [Abu Dawud (3023)]

Al-Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim:

“The prohibition on the price of a dog and the fact that it is among the most evil of earnings and is something vile indicates that it is haram to sell dogs; the transaction is not valid and the price is not halal and the one who destroys it is not obliged to repay its value, regardless of whether the dog is trained or not, or whether it is one that it is permissible to keep or not.

This is the view of the majority of scholars, including Abu Hurayrah, al-Hasan al-Basri, Rabi’ah, al-Awza’i, al-Hakam, Hammad, al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, Dawud, Ibn al-Mundhir and others.

Abu Hanifah said:

The sale of dogs that bring some benefit is permissible, and the one who destroys them must repay their value. Ibn al-Mundhir narrated from Jabir, ‘Ata and al-Nakha’i that it is permissible to sell a hunting dog but not any other kind… The evidence of the majority is these hadiths.”

Al-Hafiz said: “The apparent meaning of the prohibition is that it is haram to sell them. This is general in meaning and includes all dogs, trained and otherwise, and whether it is permissible to keep them. This also implies that the one who destroys them is not obliged to repay their value. This is the view of the majority.”

Ibn Qudamah said in al-Mughni:

“There is no dispute that sales of dogs are invalid, no matter what kind of dog it is.”

It says in Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah (13/36):

“It is not permissible to sell dogs, and their price is not halal, whether they are guard dogs, hunting dogs or any other kind, because of the hadith narrated by Abu Mas’ud ‘Aqabah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the price of a dog, the wages of a prostitute and the fee of a fortuneteller. Sahih – agreed upon.”

Shaykh Ibn Baz said: “The sale of a dog is invalid.” (Majmu’ Fatawa Ibn Baz, 19/39)

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin said in al-Sharh al-Mumti’ (8/90): “It is not permissible to sell dogs; even if they are sold for hunting, that is not permissible.”

What if they are guard dogs?

Based on the above hadiths selling all kinds of dogs even guard dogs are not permitted in Islam. the ones who say that selling hunting dogs and watchdogs is allowed took the following hadith as evidence: al-Nasai (4589) narrated from Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), that “the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the price of dogs and cats, except for hunting dogs. “

However, the last part “except for hunting dogs. “is weak. Then what about playing with a dog or touching a dog? You can learn about it in Is it haram to Play with a Dog and is dog haram to Touch.

When is it permissible to buy a hunting or guarding dog?

If a person needs a dog for hunting or guarding and cannot find anyone to give him a dog except by selling it, it is permissible for him to buy it, and the sin will be on the seller because he has sold something that he is not permitted to sell.

Ibn Hazm said in al-Muhalla (7/493):

“It is not permissible to sell a dog at all, whether it is a hunting dog or a herding dog, or any other kind. If a person is forced to buy a dog and cannot find someone to give him one, then he may buy it, and it is halal for the buyer and haram for the seller, and the buyer may take back his money whenever he is able. This is like a bribe in order to ward off oppression and ransoms for freeing prisoners and appeasing an oppressor. There is no difference.”

Then, what about having a protection dog? Read Is it haram to have a dog for Protection to learn more about it.

Is it haram to sell pet food (and other pet care products)?

Selling pet food and their care products is not haram in Islam as long as the food doesn’t contain anything that is haram in the Islamic Sharee’ah like blood. You might also be wondering, if dog walking jobs is haram or not, so read, is dog walking haram to find out.

We know that Muslims are not allowed to keep dogs unless for one of the reasons mentioned in Shariah like farming or herding livestock.

But what about earning some money from walking or working as a dog sitter? Is dog walking haram or halal? Let’s find out.

Can Muslims be dog walkers?

man walking three dogs to answer is dog walking haram

You will be happy to know that the answer to the question of is dog walking haram is that it’s not. Yes, Muslims can be dog walkers, it’s not haram.

As Muslims, we are not allowed to keep dogs as our beloved prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever keeps a dog, his reward for good deeds will decrease by one Qeeraat every day, except dogs used for farming or herding livestock.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2322.]

But when walking dogs you’re not keeping them, it’s a job like any other job. Some think that dogs are haram to touch, or that they break the wudu, but that’s not true. The dog itself is not impure, only its saliva is impure. Therefore, there’s no problem for Muslims to be dog walkers.

You can learn more by reading, is dog haram to Touch?

Are earnings from a dog walking job halal?

Yes, earnings from a dog walking job are halal, and working as a dog walker is not Haram because there’s nothing wrong in touching the dog and the dog itself isn’t impure. You may also be interested in reading Is it haram to Breed and sell dogs.

Can Muslims be dog sitters?

Yes, Muslims can work as dog sitters, and their earnings are halal, there’s no sin or anything wrong with the job.

Gain a much deeper understanding of the Quran with our Quran Online Courses for Muslims of all levels and around the world today. Reserve your spot here today!

Are these earnings halal?

Yes, earning money from working as a dog sitter or walking them is halal. The reason why Muslims are not allowed to keep dogs isn’t because they’re impure or Nijsah it’s because our beloved prophet instructed us not to do so. But it’s okay to play with them. You can learn more by reading, is it haram to play with a dog?

What does Quran say about dogs?

Dogs were only mentioned twice in the holy Quran in surah Al-Ma’idah and Al-Kahf.

“They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, “Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So, eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah.” Indeed, Allah is swift in account.” (Quran 5:4)

In this verse, Allah states that we can eat what the dog hunts for us.

In the following verse from Surah Al-Kahf, the dog was protecting the people of the cave guarding the entrance.

“And you would have seen the sun, as it rose, inclining away from their cave to the right, and as it set, declining away from them to the left, while they lay in its open space. That is one of the signs of Allah. Whoever Allah guides is truly guided. But whoever He leaves to stray, you will never find for them a guiding mentor.

And you would have thought they were awake, though they were asleep. We turned them over, to the right and left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. Had you looked at them, you would have certainly fled away from them, filled with horror.” [Quran 18:18]

Are dogs impure?

No dogs are not impure. Some people believe that keeping a dog is Najis because the dog itself is impure which is wrong. The impurity isn’t in the dog itself but in its saliva, therefore a person should not get in contact with the dog’s saliva. You can learn more from, why are dogs haram but not cats?

Can you keep dogs inside the house?

Raising a dog inside the house is not permissible for Muslims. Muslims are allowed to raise dogs only for hunting, guarding livestock, or guarding crops outside the house.

Ibn Maajah (3640) narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.” [Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.]

Al-Bukhaari (2145) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever keeps a dog, a Qiraat from his good deeds will be deducted every day, except a dog for farming or herding livestock.”

Muslim (2978) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever keeps a dog that is not a dog for hunting, herding livestock or farming, two Qiraats will be deducted from his reward each day.”

From the above hadiths, we understand that we can have a dog for protection but we can’t raise them in the house, they should be kept in a separate place.

Many of us like animals like cats and dogs, and we love to play with them, however, we stop and ask ourselves whether it’s halal or Haram to touch a dog.

Most scholars agreed that keeping dogs for one of the reasons that the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said is permitted. The Prophet (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding, hunting or farming, his reward will decrease by one Qiraat every day.” (Reported by Muslim, 2948)

From the hadith, we conclude that it’s okay to keep a dog for protection, herding, hunting or farming. But is it haram to touch a dog? Let’s find out.

Is it haram to keep a dog?

It’s not haram to keep a dog as long as there’s a reason that doesn’t go against the Shariah and Sunnah. Otherwise, the person will good deeds will decrease by one or two Qirats every day. You can learn more about it by reading, is it haram to have a dog for protection?

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: ‘Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog that is trained for hunting or a dog for herding livestock, his reward will decrease each day by two Qirats.’” [Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5059].

Muslim narrated the hadith as follows:

“Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for hunting or herding livestock, his reward will be decreased by two Qirats every day.”

The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the meaning of Qirat and he said: “The Prophet was asked, ‘What are two Qirat?’ He replied, “Equal to two huge mountains.” [narrated by Bukhari and Muslim.]

Is it OK to touch dogs in Islam?

man touching dog's belly to answer is dog haram to touch

Yes, it’s okay to touch dogs in Islam, touching or kissing dogs is not haram and doesn’t require purification. The impurity of the dog is in its saliva not its hair, or itself.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:  “With regard to dogs, there are three views among the scholars:

  • That they are tahir (pure), even their saliva. This is the view of Malik.
  • That they are najis (impure), even their hair. This is the view of al-Shafi’i and is one of the two views narrated by Ahmad.
  • Their hair is tahir but their saliva is najis. This is the view of Abu Haneefah and Ahmad in the other report narrated by him.

This is the most correct view. So if the wetness of the dog’s hair gets onto one’s garment or body, that does not make it najis.” [Majmu’ al-Fatawa, 21/530.]

So, Is dog haram to touch? No, dogs are not Haram to touch. However, if you touch the dog and your hand gets wet or if you come in contact with its saliva then you need to wash your hand seven times and one of them should be with soil or earth.

Does this mean that I can play with a dog? Yes, you can play with dogs and you can learn more about the matter by reading, is it haram to play with a dog?

What to do after touching a dog in Islam?

So, we have explained that the answer to the question of is a dog haram to touch is not, what should you do after touching it?

If your hands come in contact with its saliva then your hands need to be washed seven times and one of them should be with earth. That’s what most of the scholars agreed on.

The problem with the dog is that its saliva is impure. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him wash it seven times, one of which should be with earth.”

Do Muslims hate dogs?

No, Muslims don’t hate dogs. Muslims aren’t allowed to keep dogs as pets, but that doesn’t mean they hate them.

So, while you can keep certain dog guard dog breeds like German Shepherds and Cane Corsos, it’s not halal to keep toy pet breeds that can not be kept as guard dogs, like Bulldogs.

Actually, Islam instructs Muslims to be kind to all animals. And if we see animals needing help then we should help them.

Our beloved prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) taught that when he told us about the story of the woman who entered hell because she mistreated a cat.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A woman entered the (Hell) Fire because of a cat which she had tied. She neither gave it food nor set it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3318, Book 59, Hadith 124, Vol. 4, Book 54, Hadith 535]

The man who was rewarded Paradise for kindness to a dog

Also, the prophet told us the story of the man who found a dog thirsty and helped him, so Allah rewarded him with paradise.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A man saw a dog biting the dust because of thirst, so he took his shoe and started to scoop water up with it until the dog’s thirst was quenched. Allah appreciated his good deed and granted him entry to Paradise for it.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 174).

In another version of the hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whilst a man was walking, he became very thirsty, so he went down to a well and drank from it. When he came out, he saw a dog panting and biting the soil because of thirst. The man said, He is suffering the same as I suffered, so he filled his shoe (with water), came out and let the dog drink until his thirst was quenched. Allah appreciated his good deed and forgave him because of it.”

The people asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will we be rewarded for how we treat animals?” He said, “In every living thing there is a reward.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 2363).

If you’re wondering why are dogs haram but not cats, then read this article to find out.

What does the Quran say about dogs?

Allah mentioned dogs in the holy Quran twice, once in surah Al-Kahf and the other in surah Al-Ma’idah.

From this verse, we understand that we are allowed to eat what the dogs hunt for us.

In the following verse, Allah is telling us the story of the people of the cave and the dog that was guarding the entrance of the cave.

“And you would have seen the sun, as it rose, inclining away from their cave to the right, and as it set, declining away from them to the left, while they lay in its open space. Since dogs are mentioned in the Quran, does that means they go to heaven? Read, do dogs go to heaven in Islam, to find out.

Can you touch dogs during Ramadan?

Yes, you can touch dogs during Ramadan, touching them won’t break your fast. Just remember if your hand came in contact with its saliva, you should wash it seven times, and one of them with soil. What about dog walking?  If you want to find out you can read, is dog walking haram?

Does a dog licking you break your wudu?

No, your wudu won’t break because a dog licked you. nothing can break the Wudu except the things that we know from the Shari`ah. Therefore, whether touching the dog or its saliva it doesn’t break your wudu or require you to perform it again.

If you like fishing then there must be many questions going on in your head. Let’s try to answer all of them.

Allah said in the holy Quran:

“The two bodies of water are not alike: one is fresh, palatable, and pleasant to drink and the other is salty and bitter. Yet from them both, you eat tender seafood and extract ornaments to wear. And you see the ships ploughing their way through both, so you may seek His bounty and give thanks ˹to Him˺.” [Fatir, 12]

From that verse we can see that fishing is not haram as Allah gave us seafood to eat.

Is fishing haram? Fishing is not Haram in Islam. As long as you’re going to make use of it, like eating it or selling it. Allah said in the holy Quran: “It is lawful for you to hunt and eat seafood, as a provision for you and for travelers. But hunting on land is forbidden to you while on pilgrimage. Be mindful of Allah to Whom you all will be gathered.” [al-Maa’idah 5:96].

Is Fishing Haram?

photo of man fishing on a boat to answer is fishing haram

Fishing is not Haram in Islam; sea creatures are under the halal food that is permissible for Muslims to eat. Therefore, fishing is halal. We can see that clearly in the following verse. Allah says in the holy Quran:

“It is lawful for you to hunt and eat seafood, as a provision for you and for travelers. But hunting on land is forbidden to you while on pilgrimage. Be mindful of Allah to Whom you all will be gathered.” [al-Maa’idah 5:96].

As we can see, Allah says that fishing and eating fish is permissible.

Is fishing as a sport haram?

It is halal for Muslims to go out fishing at any time. Unlike hunting which is not permissible for the one who is in the state of Ihram (Ihram for hajj or umrah) and the one who is in the haram zone. We understand that clearly from the following verse:

“Lawful to you is what you catch from the sea and its use for food – for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel but forbidden is what you catch on land as long as you are in a state of Ihram (for Hajj or Umrah). And fear Allah to Whom you shall be gathered back”

[al-Maa’idah 5:96].

Hunting or fishing with the intention of:

  • eating
  • selling it to earn a living,

and so on is not Haram as all scholars agreed on the topic. And that goes for fishing as a sport. As long as you’re going to make use of what you catch then it’s not haram.

However, if the person goes fishing as a hobby without the intention to make any use of it or needing it then fishing as a sport becomes a disliked act. Because taking a life out of fun or as a leisure activity is not acceptable.

Here’s what is mentioned in al-Mawsoo‘ah al-Fiqhiyyah (28/115):

“If it is known that the basic principle with regard to hunting (or fishing) is that it is permissible, it cannot be deemed to be otherwise, or to be deemed Makrooh, haraam or Mandoob (recommended) or wajib (obligatory) except in specific cases for which there is specific evidence, as follows:

… Hunting or fishing is Makrooh if the purpose behind it is to have fun or do it as a leisure activity because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Do not take any living being as a target.” Narrated by Muslim (1957).”

More Scholars agree:

Many scholars agreed;

fishing as a spot out of fun without the intention of making any use of it is Makrooh (disliked).

Al-Nafraawi al-Maaliki (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Hunting for fun is Makrooh.” [Al-Fawaakih ad-Dawaani, 1/390]

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Hunting to meet a need is permissible; as for hunting for no purpose other than leisure or sport, it is Makrooh. And if it involves wronging people by transgressing upon their crops or property, then it is haraam. ” [Al-Fataawa al-Kubra, 5/550 ]

Shaykh Mansoor al-Bahooti (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“It is Makrooh to hunt for sport because that is an idle pursuit. If the hunting involves wronging people by transgressing upon their crops or property, then it is haraam. Because the means come under the same ruling as the ends. ” [Kashshaaf al-Qinaa‘, 6/213 ]

Ibn ‘Aabideen (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “In Majma‘ al-Fataawa it says:

(Hunting) is Makrooh if it is for leisure. ” [Radd al-Muhtaar, 5/297]

In short, if the person goes fishing as a sport and has the intention to make use of what he catches like eating it, selling it, or any other use then it’s not haram or Makrooh. In this case, it’s halal and comes under the ruling of permissible. Why, because in this case, the person is not hunting just to torture or hurt the fish.

What if you don’t intent to use what you catch?

On the other hand, if the person is fishing without the intention to make any use of what he catches or not needing it then fishing as a sport becomes a disliked (Makrooh) act.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“It is not prescribed to cause deal to a living being for sport. Such as hunters shooting from moving vehicles when the intention is not to eat it or feed it to others. In the hadeeth, it says: “Whoever kills a sparrow unlawfully will be questioned about it.” [Fataawa wa Rasaa’il Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem Aal ash-Shaykh, 12/231]

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“If it is for an Islamically-acceptable purpose, such as eating it or selling it, as in the case of those who catch bustards, lizards and rabbits, and other permissible animals, to eat them or sell them, then there is nothing wrong with it. But if a person is hunting or fishing in order to kill the animal and leave it there, this is not right. The least that can be said about it is that it is very makruh (disliked).

No one should hunt an animal that can be eaten unless it is for a purpose, either to eat it or feed the poor with it or give it as a gift or sell it. As for hunting it for sport, that is not permissible; it is a kind of leisure or “fun” that is not appropriate on the part of the believer.

It was narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that he forbade hunting, except for food or to make use of (the animal caught).”

Is any fish halal to eat?

Any food that comes from the sea is halal to eat whether plants or animals, as Allah says in the holy Quran:

“Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water-game and its use for food – for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel…” [al-Maidah 5:96].

Also Allah says in the holy Quran:

“The two bodies of water are not alike: one is fresh, palatable, and pleasant to drink and the other is salty and bitter. Yet from them both you eat tender seafood and extract ornaments to wear. And you see the ships ploughing their way through both, so you may seek His bounty and give thanks ˹to Him˺.”

[Fatir, 12]

But there are some exceptions, and we will discuss some of them in the following section.

Are some fish Haram to eat?

There are some sea animals that some scholars exclude from the ruling of halal, some of them are:

  • Crocodiles.
  • Frogs.
  • Otters and turtles.
  • Poisonous fish. Any fish that is Poisonous and would harm the person is not halal to eat.

Muslims are not allowed to eat anything that causes harm even if it comes from the sea, as Allah says in the holy Quran: “… And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you.” [al-Nisa 4:29] and: “… and do not throw yourselves into destruction…” [al-Baqarah 2:195]

This also means that you should not eat too much of a fish if too much of said fish can harm you. For example, some fish like Trout have high mercury in them that makes them dangerous if eaten too much.

Is fishing in the Sacred months haram?

The sacred months are Rajab, Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah, and Muharram. The sacred months were mentioned in the holy Quran in the following verse:

“Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein” [al-Tawbah, 36]

Fishing in the sacred months or while fasting is not Haram. Some people may think that hunting or fishing is haram in the sacred months but that’s not true.

When is Fishing Haram:

When it comes to hunting land animals then it’s not allowed in two situations and they are:

1 – being in the state of Ihraam for Hajj or Umrah.

We can see that clearly in the following verse from the Holy Quran:

“O you who believe! Kill not the game while you are in a state of Ihraam [for Hajj or ‘Umrah (pilgrimage)], and whosoever of you kills it intentionally, the penalty is an offering, brought to the Ka‘bah, of an eatable animal (i.e. sheep, goat, cow) equivalent to the one he killed, as adjudged by two just men among you; or, for expiation, he should feed Masaakeen (poor persons), or its equivalent in Sawm (fasting), that he may taste the heaviness (punishment) of his deed.

Allaah has forgiven what is past, but whosoever commits it again, Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is All‑Mighty, All-Able of Retribution” [al-Maa’idah, 95]

Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the tafsir of this verse:

“This is Allah’s prohibition on killing game when in the state of ihram, and a prohibition on being involved in any activities of this nature.”

2 – Hunting within the haram zone (which means Makkah and Madinah).

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Allah sanctified Makkah the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it is sacred by the sanctity decreed by Allah until the Day of Resurrection.

It was not permitted for anyone before me to fight therein and will never be permitted to anyone after me, and it was only permitted to me for part of a day. Its game is not to be disturbed and its thorns are not to be cut.”

[Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1284) and Muslim (1353).]

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: “If I saw gazelles grazing in Madinah, I would not disturb them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “The area between its two lava fields is a sanctuary.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1774) and Muslim (1372).]

From this, we conclude that fishing and hunting is not haram during the sacred months nor while fasting. When it comes to hunting, there are only two situations where it’s prohibited. If you want to learn more about the ruling of fishing while fasting or keeping a pet fish read our article Islamic dua for fishing.

Is Catch and Release Fishing Permissible?

No, catch-and-release fishing is not permissible. Because while doing so you’re hurting what you catch and there’s some research that shows that catching and releasing the fish often lead to its death. And as Muslims, we are not allowed to hurt or kill animals for fun.

What is the halal way to kill fish?

The Quran and sunnah don’t mention anything about the halal way to kill a fish.

So, you can simply catch the fish and slaughter it. However, you shouldn’t torture the fish while killing it. When slaughtering the fish use a sharp blade and slaughter the fish quickly and mercifully.

Don’t slaughter the animal using a blunt blade because you will cause unnecessary pain to the animal. Some fish are more difficult than others to kill, for example, you really need to know how to kill catfish to be able to kill them quickly and instantly as they are famously difficult to kill.

Unlike land animals that you have to slaughter in a halal way.

Meaning that you have to say ‘Bismillahi Allahu Akbar (In the name of God, God is Greater)’ before slaughtering the animal. And that is called Zabiha. Fish doesn’t require a Zabiha.

What is the halal way to eat fish?

To eat fish in a halal way you should start by saying ‘in the name of Allah (Bismillah)’. You should do that before you start eating or drinking anything, not just when eating fish.

If you started eating and forgot to say ‘in the name of Allah (Bismillah)’ then say ‘Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhir’ (In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end). That’s the sunnah of our beloved prophet (peace and blessing be upon him)

Fishing on Saturday in Islam.

Fishing on Saturday in Islam is permissible in Islam. Muslims can fish on any day. Fishing on Saturday is only prohibited for the sons of Israel as Allah said in the holy Quran:

“And ask them about the town that was by the sea. When they transgressed in (the matter of) the sabbath. When their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus, did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.” – [Qur’an 7:163]

What are the Conditions for Fishing to be Halal?

Here are the conditions in which fishing is halal:

  • Fishing for food: fishing is not haram if the person is fishing to eat o to feed others.
  • To earn a living: if the person is fishing to sell fish in the market to earn his living, then fishing is not haram.

When can Fishing become Haram?

Fishing can come under the rule of disliked if unnecessary pain is afflicted on the fish, or if the person is fishing for fun and not planning on making any use of what he catches.

Our beloved prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) told us about the woman who mistreated a cat and therefore was condemned to hell and the man who found a dog suffering from thirst and filled his shoe with water and watered it. We learn from the two stories that mistreating an animal is forbidden.

 Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst, and came out. Meanwhile, he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, “This dog is suffering from thirst as I did.” So, he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water, and watered it. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him. The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He replied: “Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate (living being).”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 2466, Book 46, Hadith 27, Vol. 3, Book 43, Hadith 646]

Islamic dua for fishing.

When it comes to Islamic dua for fishing there are no Duas mentioned in the Quran or sunnah regarding the matter. But as Muslims, we start everything by saying Bismillah (In the Name of God). Therefore, you could say ‘Bismillah (In the Name of God)’ before you start fishing.

The post Is It Haram to Have a Dog for Protection?    appeared first on QuranOnline.com.

]]>
As Muslims we know that keeping a dog is Haram, but what about having a dog for protection? That’s what we will find out in this article.

Is it haram to have a dog for protection? No, it’s not haram to keep a dog for protection, as the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) stated that keeping dogs is only allowed for farming or herding livestock. Otherwise, good deeds will decrease by one Qeeraat every day. You should also make a separate place for the dog.

If you want to know the ruling of having a dog, if touching a dog breaks the wudu or not and more then let’s get started.

Is having a guard dog permissible in Islam?

a guard dog to answer is it haram to have a dog for protection

Yes, it’s permissible to keep a dog for protection. However, you shouldn’t let them in the house, instead, you should make a separate space for the dog.

The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever keeps a dog, his reward for good deeds will decrease by one Qeeraat every day, except dogs used for farming or herding livestock.”

[Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2322.]

From this hadith, we understand that keeping a dog for fun or as a pet is not permissible. We’re only allowed to keep them for farming or herding livestock, which are used for guarding and protection.

Muslim narrated the hadith as follows:

“Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for hunting or herding livestock, his reward will be decreased by two Qeeraats every day.”

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said: This hadeeth shows that it is permissible to keep a dog for hunting and herding livestock, and also for farming.

When the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the meaning of Qirat he said:

“The Prophet was asked, ‘What are two Qirat?’ He replied, “Equal to two huge mountains.” [narrated by Bukhari and Muslim.]

Protection Reasons Only:

The hadith states that one can keep a dog for protection reasons only.

Al-‘Iraaqi said:

“Our companions and others said: it is permissible to keep a dog for these three purposes, namely hunting and protecting one’s livestock and farmland. They differed concerning keeping a dog for the fourth purpose, which is to guard houses or roads etc.

Some of our companions said that it is not permissible because of this hadeeth and others, clearly state that it is haram except for one of these three things. But most of them said, which is the more correct view, that it is permissible by way of analogy, based on the reason that may be understood from this hadeeth, which is a necessity.”

[Tarh al-Tathreeb, 6/28]

The hadiths state that dogs can’t be kept unless there’s a reason for keeping them. Some scholars say that it’s haram except for the reasons mentioned in the hadith. But most scholars agree that it’s not haram to keep a dog for guarding the house.

When it comes to the amount of deduction in Qiraat the scholars differ in their opinion. As in one version of the hadith, it says one Qiraat is being deducted and the other says two qiraats are being deducted. Some scholars say that two Qiraats will be deducted if the dog is more harmful and one Qiraat will be deducted if it is less so.

And it was said that at first the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that one Qiraat would be deducted, then the punishment was increased after that, so he said that two Qiraats would be deducted in order to put people off from keeping dogs even more.

If you want to keep a pet in the house you can keep a cat, and you could read more about it in, why are dogs haram but not cats?

Are there hadiths on keeping guard dogs in Islam?

Yes, there are several hadiths about keeping guard dogs, and here are some of them:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever keeps a dog, his reward for good deeds will decrease by one Qeeraat every day, except dogs used for farming or herding livestock.”

[Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2322.]

Muslim narrated the hadith as follows: “Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for hunting or herding livestock, his reward will be decreased by two Qeeraats every day.”

What does Quran say about dogs?

Dogs were only mentioned twice in the holy Quran in surah Al-Ma’idah and surah Al-Kahf.

“They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, “Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So, eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah.” Indeed, Allah is swift in account.”

(Quran 5:4)

Had you looked at them, you would have certainly fled away from them, filled with horror.”

Why can you keep a guard dog in Islam?

In Islam you’re allowed to keep a guard dog because the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that dogs are allowed for hunting, guarding livestock, and guarding crops.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, his reward for good deeds will decrease by one Qeeraat every day, except dogs used for farming or herding livestock.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2322.]

There are two views regarding whether it’s allowed to have a dog for protection or not. The first view states that keeping a dog is only permitted for farming, hunting, and herding, and guarding the house is not one of the three exceptions.

The second view states that having a dog for protection is permissible because the hadith shows that it’s allowed to keep a dog when necessary.

al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said that keeping a dog to guard a house is not haram and classed the second view as saheeh. Also, Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) classed the second view as saheeh and said:

“The correct view is that it is permissible to keep a dog to guard the house because if it is permissible to keep a dog in order to benefit from it, as in the case of hunting, it is more appropriate that one be allowed to keep a dog in order to ward off harm and protect oneself.”

What dog breeds can make good guard dogs?

Any dog that is calm, friendly with anyone, and has low-energy breeds are bad for protection. As they will ignore strangers or play with them. Here are the best 9 dogs that make good guard dogs:

  1. German Shepherd
  2. Akita
  3. Belgian Malinois
  4. Bullmastiff
  5. Cane Corso
  6. Doberman Pinscher
  7. Pit Bull
  8. Rhodesian Ridgeback
  9. Rottweiler

Some of these dogs are better as guard dogs than others. For example, German Shepherds are usually the easiest to train but they are not the strongest, while dogs like Pit Bulls make for stronger guard dogs but their stubborn and aggressive nature make them more difficult to train, especially if you are inexperienced in dog training.

The responsibilities of keeping a guard dog as a Muslim.

You should take care of your dog in the way that you should take of any living being in your family. Taking care of the dog is a responsibility more like taking care of a child than it is taking care of a property.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said,

“While a man was walking on his way, he became extremely thirsty. He found a well, he went down into it to drink water. Upon leaving it, he saw a dog that was panting out of thirst. His tongue was lolling out and he was eating moist earth from extreme thirst.

The man thought to himself: ‘This dog is extremely thirsty as I was. So, he descended into the well, filled up his leather sock with water, and holding it in his teeth, climbed up and quenched the thirst of the dog. Allah appreciated his action and forgave his sins”.

The Companions asked: “Shall we be rewarded for showing kindness to the animals also?” the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “A reward is given in connection with every living creature”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

“A woman entered the (Hell) Fire because of a cat which she had tied. She neither gave it food nor set it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 3318, Book 59, Hadith 124, Vol. 4, Book 54, Hadith 535]

From the above hadiths, we understand that we should be kind to animals, and not to harm them. Therefore, as a Muslim keeping a guard dog you should feed the dogs, be kind to them, play with them, and take care of them.

But what about walking them? is dog walking haram? No dog walking isn’t haram and you should walk them. However, you shouldn’t get in contact with their saliva, why? you can learn more about it in, is it haram to play with a dog?

Should you breed or neuter your guard dog as a Muslim?

You might be wondering, is it haram to breed and sell dogs? There’s a fatwa that states the following when it comes to breeding or neutering your guard dog as a Muslim:

Buying, selling, and breeding dogs that can help in criminal investigations and in other matters that bring benefit to people is permissible. However, breeding dogs as a matter of extravagance or blind imitation is in no way accepted.

Does Touching a Dog Break Wudu?

Many people wonder, is dog haram to touch, if they touch their dogs should they perform wudu? And the answer is no, touching a dog will not break your wudu and it’s not haram.

There is no evidence in Shari`ah that touching a dog breaks the wudu. The things that nullify wudu are only the things knowing in Shari`ah.

Touching dogs or their saliva doesn’t break the wudu. Ibn Qudamah mentioned in al-Mughni (1/264) the things that nullify wudu and dogs are not of them.

He said:

“These are all the things that nullify taharah, and it cannot be nullified by anything else according to the view of the majority of scholars. But there is no doubt that a dog’s saliva is very dirty and extremely impure, and it can only be removed by washing seven times, one of them with earth. There is a difference between this and something which nullifies taharah.”

Can you raise dogs inside the house?

Raising a dog inside the house is not permissible for Muslims. Muslims are allowed to raise dogs only for hunting, guarding livestock, or guarding crops outside the house.

Ibn Maajah (3640) narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.” [Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.]

Al-Bukhaari (2145) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, a Qiraat from his good deeds will be deducted every day, except a dog for farming or herding livestock.”

Muslim (2978) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog that is not a dog for hunting, herding livestock or farming, two Qiraats will be deducted from his reward each day.”

From the above hadiths, we understand that we can have a dog for protection but we can’t raise them in the house, they should be kept in a separate place.

You might also ask yourself, do dogs go to heaven in Islam? and you can read the article to know more about it.

Are dogs impure?

No dogs are not impure. Some people believe that keeping a dog is Najis because the dog itself is impure which is wrong. The impurity isn’t in the dog itself but in its saliva, therefore a person should not get in contact with the dog’s saliva.

Does touching or kissing a dog require purification?

Touching or kissing a dog doesn’t require purification. The things that nullify wudu are only the things knowing in Shari`ah, and touching a dog isn’t one of them. So, when touching your dog, you don’t need to purify yourself with soil or water.

The hadith mentions that one should purify the vessel from which the dog drinks or licks if you want to use it, but it doesn’t say anything about purifying yourself. Additionally, if the vessel is for the dog and you won’t use it then you don’t have to purify it with water and soil.

If you have a sick dog there are some dua to recite which you will find here, dua for a sick dog.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The purification of the vessel of one of you if a dog licks it, is to wash it seven times, the first time with soil.” [Nararted by Muslim, 279.]

And according to another report by Muslim (280): “If a dog licks the vessel of one of you, let him wash it seven times and rub it with soil the eighth time.”

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:  “With regard to dogs, there are three views among the scholars:

  1. That they are tahir (pure), even their saliva. This is the view of Malik.
  2. That they are najis (impure), even their hair. This is the view of al-Shafi’i and is one of the two views narrated by Ahmad.
  3. Their hair is tahir but their saliva is najis. This is the view of Abu Haneefah and of Ahmad in the other report narrated from him.

This is the most correct view. So if the wetness of the dog’s hair gets onto one’s garment or body, that does not make it najis.” [Majmu’ al-Fatawa, 21/530.]

He also said: “That is because the basic principle is that substances are tahir, and it is not permissible to regard anything as najis or haram without evidence, as Allah says in the holy Quran:

“while He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you, except under compulsion of necessity?” [al-An’am 6:119]

“And Allah will never lead a people astray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them as to what they should avoid” [al-Tawbah 9:115]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“The purification of the vessel of one of you, if a dog licks it, is to wash it seven times, the first time with soil” – and in another hadith, “If a dog licks a vessel…” All of the ahadith mention licking only; they do not mention any other part of the dog, and regarding them as najis is based only on analogy.

Moreover, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted a concession allowing people to keep dogs for hunting, herding, and farming. The one who keeps them must touch the wetness of their hair, just as happens in the case of mules, donkeys, etc. To suggest that their hair is najis when touching them cannot be avoided could impose an undue hardship, which is not what the Lawgiver intended for this ummah.” [Majmu’ al-Fatawa, 21/217, 218]

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin said:

“With regard to touching this dog, if there is no wetness then it does not make the hand najis, but if he touches it and there is any wetness, then this means that the hand becomes najis according to the view of many scholars, and the hand must be washed after that seven times, one of which should be with soil.” (Majmu’ Fatawa Ibn ‘Uthaymin, 11/246)

Just to be sure you better wash your hands seven times if there is something wet on your hands or if there’s something wet on the dog.

Conclusion.

Muslims are allowed to have dogs for protection, hunting, guarding livestock, and guarding crops, but they are not allowed to keep them for fun or as a pet. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, his reward for good deeds will decrease by one Qeeraat every day, except dogs used for farming or herding livestock.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2322.]

We also discussed that you don’t have to purify yourself when touching your dog or performing Wudu because the dog itself isn’t impure.

When hunting and slaughtering animals in Islam you’ve to say ‘Bismillahi Allahu Akbar (In the name of God, God is Greater)’ before slaughtering them. Then what about fishing? Is there an Islamic Dua for Fishing as well?

While there is no specific Islamic dua for fishing mentioned in Quran or sunnah, you could still say ‘Bismillah (In the Name of God)’ before you start fishing. Because as Muslims we’re taught to say Bismillah (In the Name of God) before doing anything.

Now, if you want to learn if you can go fishing while fasting or if it is allowed to keep a pet fish in Islam or not then let’s get started.

Is Fishing Haram?

men fishing at sunset to show what is the islamic dua for fishing

No, Fishing is not Haram in Islam, as Allah says in the holy Quran: “It is lawful for you to hunt and eat seafood, as a provision for you and for travelers. But hunting on land is forbidden to you while on pilgrimage. Be mindful of Allah to Whom you all will be gathered.” [al-Maa’idah 5:96].

So, Is fishing haram? No, it’s not haram, however, if the person goes out fishing without the intention to use what he catches like selling, or eating it then fishing in this case is disliked (Makrooh).

Gain a much deeper understanding of the Quran with our Quran Online Courses for Muslims of all levels and around the world today. Reserve your spot here today!

Can you go fishing while fasting?

Yes, you can go fishing while fasting as long as you have the intention to make use of what you catch like earn a livelihood.

However, fishing for leisure is disliked especially in the month of Ramadan, Allah says in the holy Quran:

“It is lawful for you to hunt and eat seafood, as a provision for you and for travelers. But hunting on land is forbidden to you while on pilgrimage. Be mindful of Allah to Whom you all will be gathered.”

[al-Maa’idah 5:96].

Can you keep a pet fish in Islam?

Yes, keeping a pet fish is permissible in Islam. Muslims are allowed to keep pets like birds, fish, and any pet animals except pigs.

Our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us about the woman who entered hell because she refused to feed a cat or let it eat from the vermin of the earth.

He said,

“A woman entered the (Hell) Fire because of a cat which she had tied. She neither gave it food nor set it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari 3318, Book 59, Hadith 124, Vol. 4, Book 54, Hadith 535]

Keeping pet animals is not haram because there is no Islamic prohibition regarding the matter.

The Sahabaah Kept Pets!

Actually, some hadiths show that some of the Sahaabah kept pet animals.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that his younger brother used to have a nughar (a small bird or nightingale). When the bird died, he was sad and grieving, when the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he joked with him and said “O Abu Umayr, what happened to the nughayr?” this implies that keeping a pet isn’t haram.

It’s also said that Abu Hurayrah was called so because a cat used to accompany him.

Therefore, we understand that keeping a pet fish or any pet animal is allowed in Islam except pigs and dogs.

Also, you’re not allowed to treat them badly or neglect them. You’re encouraged to take good care of your pet, be kind to it and feed it. Our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

“In every living being there is reward.”

Keeping pet animals and abusing them is Haram in Islam as we learned from the story of the woman who entered hell because of a cat. We were also told about the man who watered a dog.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well.

Is Fishing on Saturday haram in Islam?

Fishing on Saturday in Islam is permissible in Islam. Muslims can fish on any day. Fishing on Saturday is only prohibited for the sons of Israel as Allah said in the holy Quran:

“And ask them about the town that was by the sea. When they transgressed in (the matter of) the sabbath. When their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus, did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.” – [Qur’an 7:163]

Most Muslims read Surah Rahman every day for its many benefits. But, what are those benefits that make them read it daily? Let’s find out what are the REAL benefits of reading Surah Rahman on a daily basis

Surah Ar Rahman was revealed in Makkah. It’s the surah number 97 in the order of revelation and number 55 in the holy Quran.

It has only 78 verses and if falls in the Juz number 27. The meaning of Al Rahman in English is merciful.

What are the benefits of reading Surah Rahman every day? Reading Surah Rahman daily brings you closer to Allah, gives you some peace of mind, and erases all your worries. When you feel anxious and stressed, read it and your heart will heal.

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Everything has an adornment, and the adornment of Quran is Surah Ar Rahman.”

This hadith shows the significance of surah Al-Rahman as it is considered the adornment of the holy Quran.

It was also narrated that:

“The Prophet (PBUH) went to the companions and recited Surah Rahman but they were all quiet. He told them that he went to the Jinn and recited it to them and they were responsive. And when he would recite the verses

‘And which of the favors of the Lord will you deny’ the jinn would respond

‘There is nothing among your bounties that we can deny, all praises belong to Allah”.

We only mentioned a few of the many benefits. So, let’s see more of its amazing benefits to the body and soul.

What is surah Al Rahman about?

The benefits of reading Surah Rahman daily

Before we see the many benefits of reciting surah Rahman, we will first understand its meaning and what it talks about.

Al-Rahman is one of the 99 names of Allah. The surah starts with the word Rahma. Then, it shows us the countless blessings that Allah gave us, and how heaven will be. Among the topics mentioned in surah Rahman are the following:

  • How Allah created humans and Jinn.
  • The day of judgment.
  • What awaits the people in heaven.
  • What awaits the people in hell.

Reciting surah Al-Rahman treats many diseases. It is even said that it heals the heart, and people with heart diseases should recite it daily to cure their hearts or listen to it.

Reciting Surah Rahman will acknowledge you of the many blessings you have in your life. It will also remind you of how merciful Allah is.

There’s a verse that keeps repeating in the surah, and it says

“So which of your Allah marvels will you deny”.

When you read the verse, you will wonder about the many blessings Allah gave you and you took it for granted.

Even though it’s a small surah, it carries many meanings and virtues to us.

The benefits of reading Surah Rahman every day

The name of the surah comes from Allah’s name, the merciful. Surah Rahman talks about the many blessings that Allah gave to us.

It opens the eyes of the reciter to the truth that many people choose to deny.

When it’s read with care and an honest heart it brings us closer to Allah and makes us thank him for everything we have in life.

Here’s a hadith that shows the significance of surah al-Rahman.

It was also narrated that:

“The Prophet (PBUH) went to the companions and recited Surah Rahman but they were all quiet. He told them that he went to the Jinn and recited it to them and they were responsive.

And when he would recite the verses ‘And which of the favors of the Lord will you deny’ the jinn would respond

‘There is nothing among your bounties that we can deny, all praises belong to Allah”.

Here are some of the countless benefits of reciting the surah.

1-     Protection.

Reciting surah Rahman brings us closer to Alla. It opens our eyes to the truth and acknowledges us of the many blessings that we have in life.

Therefore, reading it removes all the questions that keep going in your mind with no answer and it heals your soul.

It is said that when reading surah Rahman in the morning Allah will send the angels to look after you the whole day.

And when reading it at night, the angels will protect you until you wake up. Reciting it in the house stops the family from arguing all the time and keeps them safe, therefore some people choose to write it and hang it on the wall for protection.

2-     Acquiring Peace of mind.

For many reasons, you find yourself worried. With your mind filled with questions and situations that bother you and keep you awake all night.

With anxiety taking over your life and depression crawling closer to you. and you start to wonder, isn’t there any solution for this? How can I get out of this state I’m in?

Actually, the solution is to read surah Al-Rahman every day. Reading it will give you peace of mind and removes all your worries. It brings you closer to Allah and shows you the many wonders and blessings you have. So, instead of thinking about the things that are bothering you will see how meaningless it is Infront of all the other good things you have.

Or get accepted in a job or a career that you desire. Whatever you want in your life only Allah can make it happen, so always ask Allah for what you want, and know deep inside that it will come true.

Benefits of Surah Al Rahman for marriage.

Many people read Surah Al-Rahman for marriage, whether parents are worried about the mirage of their children or someone who wants to get married then read Surah Rahman and leave it all to Allah. And here’s how you should read it:

  • Recite eleven times Darood Sharif first.
  • Then, Recite eleven times Surah Ar Rahman.
  • Recite eleven times Darood Sharif on the last.
  • Do this for 21 days, even if there are marriage problem or delaying for any reason Allah will solve it.

When should we read Surah Rahman?

There’s no specific time to recite surah Rahman, you can read it at any time you like and you will be rewarded with many blessings.

One of the best times to Read Quran is during the night or at Fajr time. One of the best times to read the Quran is Fajr, it was mentioned in the Quran because it is the time of day when the angels come to see what everyone is doing, and who is awake to worship Allah. Isn’t it great to be one of the few people who wake up at Fajr just to worship Allah and recite the Quran?

Imam Nawawi said: “

Performing prayer and reading Quran at night is given preference because it is a time when the heart is more concentrated and farther away from distractions of different kinds, including necessary chores and the like.

It also helps prevent the worshipper from falling into the pitfall of worshipping to be seen by others, and other acts of insincerity. It is also a time of much virtue and reward as it is stated in both the Quran and Sunnah.”

Another great time of the day to read the Quran and worship Allah is midnight.

Being alone with no distractions, in the calmness of the night reciting the verses of the holy Quran understanding every verse and word that you read.

That’s how we should read the Quran in a calm environment to be able to focus on what we are reading instead of just reading to finish our daily reading.

One of the favorite days to Allah is Friday, so reading the holy Quran at any time on Friday is something you shouldn’t miss. So, be sure to read Quran every Friday.

How long does it take to read Surah Rahman?

To recite surah Rahman, it will only take from 10 to 15 minutes to complete, it might take less or more depending on you. but since it’s a small surah that’s the average time to finish it.

Tips to make time to read Quran even if you’re busy

The prophet peace and blessing be upon him said: “Read the Quran for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Judgment.”

Also, the prophet said that it saves a person from the hellfire, he said: “If you place the Quran in the cuticle and then you throw it in the fire, it will not burn.”

Memorizing and reading Quran grants us many rewards, as the prophet said: “Whoever recites a letter from the book of Lord, he will be credited with the good deed and a good deed gets a tenfold reward?”

Here’s how you can start reading Quran Daily even if you have no free time.

1-     Make your goal clear and doable and define your intentions:

The first thing you should do is to put a goal for yourself for example to read two pages every day. Put a goal that you can achieve not something impossible like “I will finish the whole Quran every day”.

Also, you have to know why you want to read the Quran daily, is it because of its many virtues, or because you saw your friend doing so and you want to do the same? Defining the reason will help you reach your goal.

As the Holy Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “Our actions are always according to our intentions. And we only get what was intended.”

When doing something you should do it for Allah, not because you want to be better than someone else or because someone asked you to do so.

Know this, if you’re doing good deeds for Allah then Allah will help you along the way and give you the strength you need. However, if you’re doing it to please someone else then you won’t continue doing it.

To conclude this, the first thing you should do is to decide how much will you read daily. Secondly, make your intention to please Allah. Thirdly, ask Allah to give you the strength to keep reading Quran.

2-     Start with a small amount:

Some of us get overwhelmed and decide to read 5 juz every day, which is not impossible by the way, but as days pass they become unable to keep up and then they get disappointed with themselves and stop reading in the end.

That’s why in my opinion you should start by reading two to five pages every day in the first week then you can increase the number of pages in the second week or third week.

As the days go by you will find yourself reading one juz every day, and the Quran recitation will be a main part of your daily routine.

Don’t rush yourself at the beginning, what we want here is to make the Quran a main part of your daily life not to do the khatam Quran in one month. Take baby steps and you will succeed in the end.

3-     Read from your smartphone.

Thanks to the technology we have now we don’t have to carry the Quran with us all the time and everywhere we go. We can simply read Quran from a smartphone or laptop.

There are many Quran applications that you could download and will help whether in learning the correct recitation of the Quran, listening to it, or reading it.

Life is much easier now, even if there is no place to perform Wudu then you can read from the mobile. If you have free time or if you’re traveling there is nothing that can stop you from reading the Quran.

There is also an app that shows you the ayah of the day like Muslim Pro, which will also help you in your journey.

4-     Listen to The Quran:

This is more to advise than an actual tip. Some people don’t like reading, so if you’re one of them then you could listen to Quran daily, and at the same time try to repeat what you hear and focus on what the reciter is saying.

5-     Read Quran in your free time:

If you have any free time or time for practicing your hobbies then you could make some of this time for reading Quran.

For example, let’s say you love painting and you paint for two hours every day, then leave 30 minutes of them or even 15 minutes for Quran reading.

6-     Make your Quran recitation a part of the daily prayers:

Another amazing way is to read a page of the Quran after every salah or before it, this way you will be in the state of Wudu and you will divide the daily Quran reading into five parts which will encourage you to continue.

Most people prefer reading Quran before or after Far because it’s one of the best times for Quran recitation, and this exact time and the nighttime generally were mentioned in the Quran to be witnessed by the angels.

The Far time has no distractions at all, everyone is asleep, only you and the Quran, so, there will be no source of distraction. Also, this method is amazing for people who don’t like to perform Wudu a lot. And you will be able to concentrate easily and understand the verses that you read.

Making the Quran recitation a part of your daily routine is not easy and we all struggle in doing so, the important thing here to know is that it is okay if you miss a day without reading the Quran. Don’t feel disappointed with yourself, because we are all humans, and it’s normal to be tired and fail to read the Quran or do what we wanted to do.

What’s important is to not let that get to you, keep trying and ask Allah to help you keep going and you will in the end.

And if you have problems reciting the Quran in General, you should consider taking a Quran Recitation course for adults. They can be of great help to every one and with the right teacher, even the hardest parts can become easy in no time.

Conclusion.

We learned in this article about the many benefits of reading Surah Al Rahman, and they include:

  • Protection.
  • Acquiring Peace of mind.
  • Reciting Surah Rahman Increases money and wealth.
  • Cures the disease.
  • Getting your dream job.

We also learned about the benefits of reading it for mirage and how to read it.

We have seen some of the topics discussed in the surah. Then we talked about the best time to read surah Rahman and how long will it take for us to finish. And in the end, we learned how to make Quran reading a main part of our daily life even if we don’t have any free time. Or if we are busy.

You have questions about the benefits of reciting Surah Mulk, and I have plenty of experience with them, so let’s answer your questions!

One of the surahs that the prophet instructed us to read in the night is surah Mulk for its many benefits that we will learn about shortly.

What are the Benefits of reciting surah Mulk? Reciting surah Mulk will protect you from grave torment. It will also intercede for its reciter on the day of judgment and grant him Allah’s forgiveness. Besides that, you will gain 10 rewards over every letter you read from the holy Quran.

Now let’s understand the meaning of surah Al-Mulk, its benefits, and Tafseer.

What Does Surah Mulk Mean?

Woman reading quran to show the benefits of reciting surah mulk

The meaning of the word Al-Mulk is (The Kingdom), the surah took its name from its first verse. It’s a Makki surah that was revealed to the prophet in Makkah before the migration to Madinah. It is the surah number 67, in Juz number 29, and surah number 77 in the order of revelation with only 30 verses.

The surah discusses Allah’s greatness and how he created heavens, earth, humans and creatures in the best forms. Giving us humans all the blessings we have and therefore we should be thankful for everything we have.

Reading Surah Mulk before sleeping.

There are many benefits to reciting surah Al-Mulk before sleeping, one of them was discussed in a hadith where the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) instructed us to read surah Al Mulk every day before sleeping to be saved from the torment of the grave. Therefore, the prophet used to call this surah al-maani’ah (that which protects).

Another reason to recite Quran whether surah Mulk or any other Surah is to gain 10 rewards for each letter that is read. The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Whoever recites a letter of the Book of Allah will be credited with a good deed and a good deed is multiplied into ten. I do not say that [the word:] “Alif Lam Meem” is [counted as] one letter. Rather, Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter and Meem is one letter”

Narrated Jabir: “The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) would not sleep until he recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil and: Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.”

The prophet used to read the surah every day before sleeping and we should do the same, as it is a sunnah of the prophet.

Benefits of Surah Mulk.

Abu Hurairah Narrated that, the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said about the benefits of reading surah al Mulk: “Indeed there is a Surah in the Qur’an of thirty Ayat, which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is [Surah] Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.”

From this hadith, we understand that reading surah Al Mulk will intercede for its reciter until Allah forgives all his/her sins. Imagine it like having a good friend that keeps asking for forgiveness on your behalf.

Narrated Jabir: “The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) would not sleep until he recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil and: Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.”

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:

“One of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) pitched a tent on a grave without knowing that it was a grave. Suddenly he heard a person from the grave reciting Surah Al Mulk till he completed it. So, he went to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, I pitched my tent on a grave without realizing that it was a grave. Then Suddenly I heard a person from the grave reciting Surah Al Mulk till he completed it.’ The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘It is the defender; it is the deliverer- it delivers from the punishment of the grave.’” (Jamiat Tirmidhi)

From this hadith we can see clearly how reciting surah Mulk saves us from the punishment of the grave for the mistakes and sins that we commit in our lives.

So far, we learned that reading surah Mulk will intercede for its reciter and protect him/her from the punishment of the grave. But what else?

1-     Reading surah al Mulk is a sunnah.

Ibn Abbas (R.A) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “It (Surah Al Mulk) is a protector; a rescuer; saving from the chastisement of the grave.”

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads Tabarak Allazee Biyadihil Mulk Surah every night, Allah SWT avoids him from the grave’s torment, and in the past we (the companions) when the Messenger (PBUH) (still alive) called it by the name, “Al-Mani’ah” (barrier).”

Surah Mulk Translation.

Blessed is the One in Whose Hands rests all authority. And He is Most Capable of everything.

˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving.

˹He is the One˺ Who created seven heavens, one above the other. You will never see any imperfection in the creation of the Most Compassionate.1 So look again: do you see any flaws?

Then look again and again—your sight will return frustrated and weary.

And indeed, We adorned the lowest heaven with ˹stars like˺ lamps, and made them ˹as missiles˺ for stoning ˹eavesdropping˺ devils, for whom We have also prepared the torment of the Blaze.1

Those who disbelieve in their Lord will suffer the punishment of Hell. What an evil destination!

When they are tossed into it, they will hear its roaring as it boils over,

almost bursting in fury. Every time a group is cast into it, its keepers will ask them, “Did a warner not come to you?”

They will reply, “Yes, a warner did come to us, but we denied and said, ‘Allah has revealed nothing. You are extremely astray.’”

And they will lament, “If only we had listened and reasoned, we would not be among the residents of the Blaze!”

And so they will confess their sins. So away with the residents of the Blaze!

Indeed, those in awe of their Lord without seeing Him1 will have forgiveness and a mighty reward.

Whether you speak secretly or openly—He surely knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart.

How could He not know His Own creation? For He ˹alone˺ is the Most Subtle, All-Aware.

He is the One Who smoothed out the earth for you, so move about in its regions and eat from His provisions. And to Him is the resurrection ˹of all˺.

Do you feel secure that the One Who is in heaven will not cause the earth to swallow you up as it quakes violently?

Or do you feel secure that the One Who is in heaven will not unleash upon you a storm of stones. Only then would you know how ˹serious˺ My warning was!

And certainly those before them denied ˹as well˺, then how severe was My response!

Have they not seen the birds above them, spreading and folding their wings? None holds them up except the Most Compassionate. Indeed, He is All-Seeing of everything.

Also, which ˹powerless˺ force will come to your help instead of the Most Compassionate? Indeed, the disbelievers are only ˹lost˺ in delusion.

Or who is it that will provide for you if He withholds His provision? In fact, they persist in arrogance and aversion ˹to the truth˺.

Who is ˹rightly˺ guided: the one who crawls facedown or the one who walks upright on the Straight Path?

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is the One Who brought you into being and gave you hearing, sight, and intellect. ˹Yet˺ you hardly give any thanks.”

˹Also˺ say, “He is the One Who has dispersed you ˹all˺ over the earth, and to Him you will ˹all˺ be gathered.”

˹Still˺ they ask ˹the believers˺, “When will this threat come to pass, if what you say is true?”

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “That knowledge is with Allah alone, and I am only sent with a clear warning.”

Then when they see the torment drawing near, the faces of the disbelievers will become gloomy, and it will be said ˹to them˺, “This is what you claimed would never come.”1

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Consider this: whether Allah causes me and those with me to die or shows us mercy, who will save the disbelievers from a painful punishment?”1

Say, “He is the Most Compassionate—in Him ˹alone˺ we believe, and in Him ˹alone˺ we trust. You will soon know who is clearly astray.”

Say, “Consider this: if your water were to sink ˹into the earth˺, then who ˹else˺ could bring you flowing water?”

Surah Mulk Tafseer.

Here is the Tafseer of Surat Al-Mulk:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Glorification of Allah and mentioning the Creation of Death, Life, the Heavens and the Stars.

Allah the Exalted glorifies His Noble Self and informs that the dominion is in His Hand. This means that He deals with all of His creatures however He wishes and there is none who can reverse His decree. He is not questioned concerning what He does because of His force, His wisdom and His justice.

And He is Able to do all things.

Who has created death and life.

Those who say that death is an existing creation use this Ayah as a proof because it is something that has been created. This Ayah means that He brought creation into existence from nothing in order to test the creatures. He examines them to see which of them will be best in deeds. This is similar to Allah’s statement,

(How can you disbelieve in Allah Seeing that you were dead and He gave you life.) (2:28) In this Ayah Allah named the first stage, which is non-existence, “death.” Then he named the origin or beginning of existence, “life.” This is why Allah says,

(Then He will give death, then again will bring you to life ( on the Day of Resurrection)) (2:28). Concerning Allah’s statement,

(He may test you which of you is best in deed.) it means best in deeds. This is as Muhammad bin `Ajlan said. It should be noted that Allah did not say “which of you does the most deeds.” Allah then says,

And He is the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving.) This means that He is the Almighty, the Most Great, the Most Powerful and the Most Honorable. However, along with this He is Most Forgiving to whoever turns to Him in repentance and seeks His pardon after having disobeyed Him and opposed His commandment. Even though Allah is Almighty, He also forgives, shows mercy, pardons and excuses. Then Allah says,

(Who has created the seven heavens one above the other;) meaning stacked one on top of the other. Are they connected to each other, meaning that they are in elevated ascension, some of them being stacked above others, or separated with space between them There are two views concerning this, and the most correct opinion seems to be the latter as is proven in the Hadith of Isra’ (the Prophet’s Night Journey) and other narrations. Concerning Allah’s statement,

(you can see no fault in the creation of the Most Gracious.) means, it (the creation) is done in a flawless manner, and these are connected with each other so as to forms a straight level, having no disunion, conflict, inconsistency, deficiency, flaw or defect. This is the reason that Allah says,

(Then look again. Can you see any rifts) meaning, look at the sky and pay close attention to it. Do you see any flaw, deficiency, defect or rifts in it Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, Ad-Dahhak, Ath-Thawri and others said concerning Allah’s statement,

(Then look again. Can you see any rifts) that it means cracks. As-Suddi said that,

(Can you see any rifts) means any tears. Qatadah said,

(Can you see any rifts) means, `do you see any defects O Son of Adam (mankind)’ In reference to Allah’s statement,

(Then look again and yet again, ) Qatadah said, “It means (look) twice.”

(your sight will return to you Khasi’,) Ibn `Abbas said that Khasi’ means humiliated. Mujahid and Qatadah both said that it means despised.

(and worn out.) Ibn `Abbas said that this means it will be exhausted. Mujahid, Qatadah and As-Suddi all said that it means broken down fatigue that comes from weakness. Thus, the Ayah means that if you continuously looked, no matter how much you look, your sight will return to you.

(Khasi’) due to the inability to see any flaw or defect (in Allah’s creation).

(and worn out.) meaning, exhausted and broken down feebleness due to the great amount of repeated looking without being able to detect any deficiency. Then, after Allah negated any deficiency in the creation of the heavens, He explains their perfection and beauty. He says,

(And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps, ) This refers to the stars which have been placed in the heavens, some moving and some stationary. In Allah’s statement,

(and We have made them (as) missiles to drive away the Shayatin,) The pronoun `them’ in His statement, “and We have made them” is the same type of statement as the stars being referred to as lamps. This does not mean that they are actually missiles, because the stars in the sky are not thrown. Rather, it is the meteors beneath them that are thrown and they are taken from the stars. And Allah knows best. Concerning Allah’s statement,

(and We have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire.) means, `We have made this disgrace for the devils in this life and We have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire in the Hereafter.’ This is as Allah said in the beginning of Surat As-Saffat,

(Verily, We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty). And to guard against every rebellious devil. They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side. Outcast, and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment. Except such as snatch away something by stealing, and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.)

37:6-7 Qatadah said, “These stars were only created for three purposes: Allah created them as adornment for the heaven (sky), as missiles for the devils and as signs for navigation. Therefore, whoever seeks to interpret any other meanings for them other than these, then verily he has spoken with his own opinion, he has lost his portion and burdened himself with that which he has no knowledge of.” Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim both recorded this statement.

The benefits of reading Surah Mulk At Night.

Jabir narrated: “The Prophet (PBUH) would not sleep until he recited surah Alif  laam meem Tanzeel (Surah Sajdah) and Surah Tabarak (Surah Al Mulk).”

Performing wudu is essential before praying and reading Quran from the Mushaf, therefore we will learn how to perform it in easy steps.

How To Perform Wudu for Females? Females should perform Wudu in the same way males do Wudu, Quran has not differentiated between the way males and females should do Wudu, and females should still do Wudu by washing their heads, hands, face, and feet.

The holy Quran says the following about performing Wudu for females and males:

“O believers! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.

And if you are in a state of ˹full˺ impurity, then take a full bath. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth by wiping your faces and hands.”

If you want to learn how to perform wudu step by step and if there’s a difference between wudu for women and men or not, then keep reading.

How to perform Wudu for females?

A Medda to show how to perform wudu for females

It’s important to perform wudu before prayers, and we will guide you step by step to ensure your complete understanding. But before we start let’s first answer this question, Is Wudu for females different than wudu for males? What do you think the answer is? The answer is no, there I no difference between performing wudu for men or women.

Now let’s learn how to perform Wudu, just make sure to follow those steps in order:

  1. First make your intention and say ‘Bismillah’ which means ‘in the name of Allah’.
  2. Wash your hands starting with the right hand up to the wrist three times, then wash your left hand up to the wrist three times. There’s a hadith that says: “and when he washes his hands, every evil he did with his hands leaves with the water – or with the last drop of water – until he becomes free of sin.”
  3. Then, Wash your mouse three times. Cup some water in your right hand and wash your mouth.
  4. Wash your nose three times: be careful at this step you don’t wash your nose, no you should cup some water in your right hand and inhale it and blow it, repeat this three times.
  5. Wash your face starting from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear three times, and make sure that the water reaches your entire face.
  6. Afterward, Wash your right starting from your fingertips up to the elbows three times then repeat the process with your left hand. And of course, if you have nail polish on you should remove it before performing wudu.
  7. Wipe your head starting from the front of your head until the nape of your neck. This step is called “Masah”, wash your hand and then shake any excess water then wipe your head just once.
  8. Wipe your ears from the back with your thumbs and use your index finger to wash them from the inside, this step is only done once.
  9. Wash your right foot three times starting from the toes and washing between them up to the back of your ankles three times, then repeat the process with your left foot.
  10. To finish the wudu recite the following dua: “Ash-hadu ’an laa ’ilaaha ’illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah, wa ’ash-hadu ’anna Muhammadan ’abduhu wa Rasooluh.”

In English, it means: “I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.”

How to perform wudu for females after period?

After period you should perform what is called Ghusl, then you can perform wudu as you normally do, the steps of performing wudu will not change.

Aishah narrated that the Prophet “peace and blessing be upon him” told Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh: “When menstruation starts (you should) stop praying, and when it leaves, take a (purificatory) bath, then start praying again.”

Now let’s see how to perform Ghusl for females:

How do you do a Junub bath?

Ghusl is performed in three stages. First, make the niyyah (intention), wash your private parts from any blood, then perform the following steps:

1-     Wash your head down to your nick.

2-     Then wash the right side of your body first, starting from the shoulder down to the foot.

3-     Now do the same process with the left side of your body.

Ensure that the water reaches each part and wash it thoroughly, and when washing your hair comb it with your fingers carefully to ensure that the water reaches the roots of the hair. And that’s it.

How to perform wudu for females at work?

It’s hard for females to perform wudu at work because of the hijab. But here is what you can do:

A woman could take off the hijab and do Wudu if she can or she could put her hands under the hijab and wipe her hair and ears if she can. But also, it is permissible to wipe over the hijab if it is difficult to take it off and wear it again.

When Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked: “It is permissible for a woman to wipe over her khimaar?”

His answer was: “The well-known view in the madhhab of Imam Ahmad is that she may wipe over her khimaar if it goes under her chin because it was narrated that some of the womenfolk of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did that.

Whatever the case, if there is some difficulty, either because the weather is cold or because it is difficult to take it off and put it on again, then there is nothing wrong with wiping in such cases, otherwise it is better not to do that.”

Another fatwa says: “It is also valid for a woman to wipe over a khimaar that goes under the chin because Umm Salamah used to wipe over her khimaar, as was mentioned by Ibn al-Mundhir.”

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen said: “It is also Sunnah to wipe whatever part of the head is uncovered, such as the forelock, the sides of the head, and the ears.”

Okay, that’s one problem solved, but what about the feet? Should I take off the socks to perform wudu? No, you don’t have to take off your socks you can wipe your feet over them. However, there are some conditions that must be met so that you can wipe over it, or else you will have to take it off, and the conditions are:

  • The socks must be thick and not transparent so that no water can pass through them when you wipe over them.
  • Socks must cover the feet up until the ankle bone.
  • Socks must be worn after performing wudu, you should be in a state of purity when you wear them, or else you will have to take them off to perform Wudu.

For females it much harder to perform wudu at work, but I hope those few tips makes it easier for you.

What do you say before wudu?

Before you start performing wudu you should first make your intention and say ‘Bismillah’ which means ‘in the name of Allah’.

What to say after making Wudhu?

After finishing the wudu recite the following dua: “Ash-hadu ’an laa ’ilaaha ’illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah, wa ’ash-hadu ’anna Muhammadan ’abduhu wa Rasooluh.”

In english it means: “I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.”

You could also say:

اَللَّهُـمَّ اجْعَلْنِـي مِنَ التَّـوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَـلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّـرِينَ.

O Allah, make me of those who return to You often in repentance and make me of those who remain clean and pure.

What did the prophet say about Wudu?

Here’s some of the hadith concerning wudu for females and males:

Abu Hurayrah, Narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “The prayer of a person who does not perform ablution is not valid, and the ablution of a person who does not mention the name of Allah (in the beginning) is not valid.”

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that: The Messenger of Allah said: “There is no ablution for one who does not mention the Name of Allah (before doing it).”

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “When a Muslim, or believer, performs Wudu’, washing his face, every evil that he looked at with his eyes leaves with the water – or with the last drop of water, or an expression similar to that – and when he washes his hands, every evil he did with his hands leaves with the water – or with the last drop of water – until he becomes free of sin.”

A man said to the prophet “Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution.” The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Perform ablution in full and make the fingers go through the beard and snuff with water well except when you are fasting.”

Is Wudu mentioned in the holy Quran?

Yes, wudu was mentioned in the holy Quran and there is no difference between females and males in the way wudu is performed. And here are some verses from the holy Quran about Wudu:

“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of Janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.” (Surah Maidah Ayah 6)

“O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a state of Janabah, except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.” (Surah An-Nisa Ayah 43)

What are the Virtues of performing wudu?

To be pure and be able to pray and hold the Mushaf, it is essential to perform Wudu first, it doesn’t just purify the body but also the soul from all the sins.

Wudu is the essential form of purification. It is a means of taharah that cleans an individual out of his sins. The simple act of cleansing oneself is a cause for his radiance as narrated:

“Once I went up the roof of the mosque, along with Abu Huraira. He performs ablution and said, “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) saying, “On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called “Al-Ghurr-ul- Muhajjalun” from the trace of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (i.e. by performing ablution regularly).

From the hadith, we can see one of the major benefits of performing Wudu whether for females or males. Let’s understand what it says. The word “Ghurr” is the plural of “Agharr” and it means really white, and it refers to the white mark that will be on the forehead of the faithful ones on the day of judgment.

The word “Muhajjalun” comes from the word Tahjil, and it also means whiteness. And it refers to the white light that will shine from the hands and legs of the believers on the day of judgment because of every wudu they have performed in their lives.

This means that when females and males perform wudu, this purifies their souls and they will be distinguishable from others on the day of judgment. As there will be light illuminating from their forehead, hands, and legs.

Allah says in the holy Quran:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.

What to do if you Don’t know if you broke the wudu or not?

If you can’t remember if you broke the wudu or not, then you can perform wudu once again. Also you can perform wudu before every salah (prayer) if you like, actually it is recommended to perform it before every salah.

However, some people keep questioning themselves whether their wudu is valid or not. The same case happened in the past, a man thought that his wudu was broken while he was praying, so the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said to him: “Do not stop praying until you hear a sound or smell an odor.”

Therefore, if you don’t know if your Wudu is broken or not then the rule says that your wudu is still valid!

Conclusion.

Allah says in the holy Quran about performing Wudu for females and males: “O believers! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of ˹full˺ impurity, then take a full bath. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth by wiping your faces and hands.”

We made it clear that there is no difference between females and males when performing Wudu, and here are the steps to follow:

1-     First make your intention and say ‘Bismillah’ which means ‘in the name of Allah’.

2-     Wash your hands starting by the right hand up to the wrist three times, then wash your left hand up to the wrist three times. There’s a hadith that says: “and when he washes his hands, every evil he did with his hands leaves with the water – or with the last drop of water – until he becomes free of sin.”

3-     Wash your mouse three times. Cup some water in your right hand and wash your mouth.

4-     Wash your nose three times: be careful at this step you don’t wash your nose, no you should cup some water in your right hand and inhale it and blow it, repeat this three times.

5-     Wash your face starting from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear three times, and make sure that the water reaches your entire face.

6-     Wash your right starting from your fingertips up to the elbows three times then repeat the process with your left hand. And of course, if you have nail polish on you should remove it before performing wudu.

7-     Wipe your head starting from the front of your head until the nape of your neck. This step is called “Masah”, wash your hand and then shake any excess water then wipe your head just once.

8-     Wipe your ears from the back with your thumbs and use your index finger to wash them from the inside, this step is only done once.

9-     Wash your right foot three times starting from the toes and washing between them up to the back of your ankles three times, then repeat the process with your left foot.

10-  To finish the wudu recite the following dua: “Ash-hadu ’an laa ’ilaaha ’illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah, wa ’ash-hadu ’anna Muhammadan ’abduhu wa Rasooluh.”

In English, it means: “I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.”
